Do you feel you get appropriate career counseling and support for personal growth and development ? What are your expectations? Year 7 partner, doing well, but feel like most of my advice is from peers and not senior partners. Really wish I had that but maybe that’s not the norm?

Don’t you have a 360 kind of process for feedback. We have it every 2 years done by a distant Sr a principal on your behalf, and it’s a good way to collect feedback anonymously - I mainly ask for blind spots and things I should be doing differently. It’s shared with some very Sr partners but is generally useful mechanism to solve for the problem most of you are talking about.

Deep personal advice, I have a couple of other partners who I go to. One is good and I fully trust, the other one is good with advice too but I don’t fully trust! 😀

We do 360 every year from peers as well as with our teams (so downward, upward and your peers) but it’s not a process that yields deep meaningful things to reflect on and work on unless you’re in the bottom 20% which is a very bad place to be.

Interesting how careful this community is with what you say and more so the higher and higher you go. We seem to be careful about speaking freely and openly (and rightfully so) so as not to be taken out of context or have what we say used against us.

One might remember that next time you second guess one of your own colleagues or other leaders and ask yourself whether or not you have the full context.

In general, the world is a better place when we assume that most people at higher levels are trying to do their best.

Just an observation

Partner with them on something. Work together. Ask questions, solicit their input.

Mentorship is borne of intimacy; they may not think you want advice.

like

That’s why you need a few mentors. Choose some people from different backgrounds and locations and you’ll find someone that works for you.

I’ll counter. Why ask other partners for personal development advice?

I’ve seen those conversations used AGAINST partners. E.g. some partner shares, in confidence, that he has some personal development goal ( personal growth, family time, handling burnout). I’ve seen that information leak out and alter people’s progression.

You should have senior people where you discuss personal growth goals, but keep them outside the firm.

Professional growth, of course within the firm.

likesmart

That’s one of the concerns.

Unfortunately, I feel like many of our senior Partners/Principals are more concerned with how they’re perceived or their own viability vs. extending themselves to help other more junior in their Partner/Principal tenures. Not all, but many.

like

That’s exactly it. The ones that come to mind have not seen a client in 10+ years and continue to refer to things they did in the 90s or early 2000s.

The responses to this thread are making me feel like I'm too open about asking for advice... I have a few partners that do quarterly check in calls. Maybe it's because I'm a more junior partner or just naieve about the reprocussions of asking but I've always been super open about what I feel is going well and where I'm unsure

like

I do the same, I’d rather be open and see how others are viewing me vs just assume it’s all good. Especially as a newer partner (I’m a 5 year now) it can be a tough transition and certainly to make partner does not infer you should be the finished article, so to speak.

like

That’s even more intimate - in normal times, that’s a conversation over a nice bottle of something with someone you trust has your best interests at heart.

Outside mentorship is more productive. Great question

like

I have been after the same but always find it quite lacking. There is no formal structure for feedback and every time I ask I get “you’re doing all the right things”. I believe I am doing a lot of things well but am also sure there are blind spots as well so I do get a bit frustrated with the lack of formality in this area.

like

Y5 here, I've been trying to figure this out myself, but.... it's almost as though there are no answers... you just do it. There are a few established paths, and you just pick one and go for it.

like

Yes, sounds like we are having the same experience

I personally don’t look for sensitive advice from anyone in my direct pyramid or practice area. There’s a handful of partners outside of my general day to day who I talk to if I need a sounding board for internal stuff but I’m a little cautious even with them. If it’s real deep personal advice needed my wife and friends are my go to.

100% D1

There are folks at the SHREK firms who do this type of coaching professionally on a personal basis. We have also had one of them in recently for leadership training which included development coaching.

I’m fairly new to the senior ranks, but I find this thread pretty disappointing but also true. Part of me wants to leave consulting for this very reason, there isn’t actually anyone to teach you, it’s too Machiavellian.

I guess question for those of you who know, is it just the same everywhere?

I'm currently an account manager in an agency. I've been there for 20 years (26 years experience total). My goal has always been to learn all I could and then transition into underwriting. Life happened, I got complacent and stayed on the agency side longer than I planned. I'm now looking to make the jump. I know that crossover doesn't happen often and there are limited underwriting positions available. Does anyone have any suggestions or words of advise? Key words that should be in my resume?

Partners - I am doing some updated financial and estate planning and looking at how much (& types of ) life insurance I carry. In my early 40s, currently have $3M in term life insurance with $3.5M in assets, and spend about $150k per year now. My financial planner was recommending I add $5M in life insurance at a minimum but was suggesting closer to $10M. My projected earnings in next 20 years is likely $30-35M in current $s. Do others carry that much life insurance and why?
