OW...honest perspective as POC. Overall have done well compared to the market (perception), but many improvements required and are not perfect. For eg. Doesn’t seem like we have any Black Partners...still in many offices globally we don’t have many or any Black consultants...many in leadership are aware of privilege and try to be fair but it still rolls its ugly head at times.

Senior leadership though have acknowledged and are trying...unclear what these efforts will do or if it’s just because it’s the latest conversation around the water cooler

As someone involved in firm D&I initiatives, I’ve noticed that the majority of people who attend the trainings are minorities and women who are impacted by racism, bias, prejudice, etc. the most. The teams I work on are also primarily female run. In order for training about things like unconscious bias to be as effective as we need them to be, white people, especially white males to come to the table and do the hard work.

I've noticed this as well. I joined our D&I group to help drive initiatives / change, but it often feels more like a support group than a task force.

I find PwC is finding their way. I’m old enough in the Firm when being a white woman was a rarity. Now I work with people of all backgrounds. We have work to do but we shouldn’t lose sight of the work we have done.

Let me give a very real example. With all of the protests going on in the US, I was thinking of black colleagues that I could reach out to with a nice kind note. I could only think of 2 that I’ve worked with in 4 years. This is in our HC practice, which I would argue does the most talking about diversity and inclusion. So, a hard no from me.

I feel like they want to be, but no one is willing to make an effort of uncomfortable self examination, rock-the-boat discussions about fellow leaders, or possibly-impact-money meaningful changes. So it remains mostly lip service.

I have worked closely with our internal D&I team and know that there are many who care, but D&I budget seems to be one of the first to get cut particularly in this environment. So many ideas we don’t have resources to implement.

HR policies are supposed to be colorblind. And if there not, we should work on making them more colorblind, not the other way around

The policies typically are. But HR is often not the ones enforcing the policies. It’s much harder to change the unconscious bias of employees who are the ones interviewing candidates, leaders who are the ones making decisions of who to sponsor and who to bring into the folks for growth opportunities, etc

Confession: I think I’m developing a bias towards men. For >4 years, I’ve been on projects of 10-40 ppl, with 4 men total. 3 now gone; all were 50+, ageist/mansplainers, that did not add value, actually hindered progress, and made more $. Also had a baby 2 yrs ago — Amicable and co-parenting from same home for the time being, but am the breadwinner + carry the bigger mental/household load.

I crave diversity on a team and hope to find love one day, but am exhausted/frustrated. Any advice?

As a straight male, the world would be safer if no men existed. Men commit most of the problems and crimes this world has. I was having this discussion with my girlfriend and I didn’t realize how bad the male gender is.

Coming from Manhattan, the difference in diversity is something that stands out to me a lot. I find here, that if I match or go on a date with someone that’s non-Asian, invariably I find that they’re into anime, K-pop, Asian culture etc.

I have been experiencing a lot of subtle bullying and gaslighting from my company. Its the oddest thing because I know its gaslighting but I almost try to explain it away in a sense like maybe thats not it and etc. My company lacks diversity so I ma not sure if that’s why but its been odd and getting worst every day. I’ve always been a big saver minimum 15% to maxing out my 401k since I graduated college. I’m married to someone who thinks 6% is enough and likes $$$ cars. Other than the cars, they dont really spend money. For the married 🐠, how do you have the conversation with them that what they are doing isn’t enough? So I got 2 offers, 1 at a well-known firm (that I previously worked at, not as an atty) that offered 80K plus full benefits (100% health coverage, PTO, sick days, discretionary bonus & 1800 billable req.) I’ve seen a lot of people on here talk about how all they do is churn out slides. I do the same. But for my perspective, it’s not JUST churning out slides. It’s taking a complex idea/thought/solution and illustrating it into easy to consume content. I think it’s a skill of its own: effective communication.
