Yes, I’m better for having clerked. I think about things differently. And my colleagues frequently come to me with questions on fed court items (especially those from my old district) and deem me an expert on certain things. It’s nice job security and it garners respect around the office (whether justified or not).
Ten years out. In a lit speciality. Trying to broaden my skillset/practice and level up a better firm.
Also, there’s value in the connections you make while clerking. Your co-clerks are going to be among the top stars in their legal communities so it pays to have that network. Not to mention the instant ties you make with your judge’s other clerks both past and future.
It definitely made a big difference for me. You will never get more writing experience as an associate at any level than you do while clerking (it’s basically all you do). And it helped me develop a pretty strong intuition early on about how judges will see/react to certain things.

I’m about to do a federal clerkship. The pay cut hurts but from what I’ve heard, it’s certainly worth it the experience is invaluable and so are the relationships you develop especially if you get a down to earth judge. Money comes and goes, it’s only one year!

Only a 100k?
Answer is obvious yes. To what extent will depend on court and judge.
Thanks so much
