Many who repatriate are lured by a vibrant startup scene in India that is drawing unprecedented capital from venture and private equity firms and is buoyed by an effervescent market for stocks. But they are also disenchanted with what they perceive as America’s bleak and hopeless immigration landscape, where the wait times for green cards are tortuously long, and the limits on launching startups for newcomers are highly restrictive.

It should be. Don't take debt or a monthly car payment. Take a cheap car with all cash and sell it off. I regret buying my new car.
Visa shouldn’t be a factor to buy a car. If you drive a lot, but. If not, lease.
This is my 4th lease in 8 years. I love driving news cars. But I negotiate with at least 6-7 dealerships before getting into a lease. The one which has least payment is one what I go for. I show one dealership quote to other and negotiate . I make sure that I get the same value as some one who buys a car.. some times better. But it takes lot of patience and stress to do it . All in all buying a car is cheaper and safe rather leasing if you are on H1B. But if you want to drive latest model every 2 years, You need to put efforts. If you just step into a dealership and get a lease, you will be robbed in comparison to buying a new car.

Thanks guys. All great perspectives! Thinking of leasing the BMW X3. Driving will mostly be on weekends and road trips. Plan to stay in the US for 3 years. Of course buying used and cheap would be smart but I will probably never get to drive such cars once I move back home in India.

Fair point. We have considered this. We used Uber/Getaound/Zipcar/Hertz for the last 5 years. With the virus we don’t want to ride share. Between me and the wife, counting one at least one of us will have a job. Does make it a pretty hard decision.
Roght now I’d say lease. It’s basically 10-15% total cost difference with freedom to use latest cars if you want every 3 years, not tied to usual Japanese cars that majority of have good resale values and personally I am waiting for electric cars tk get cheaper and come into mass production just like gas ones are so I can afford to buy something I’d use for years.
Lease a nice car and enjoy the ride ...
