I once took a calligraphy class where we got to write our last name and they would make it into a return address stamp for us. I ended up using my boss’ last name and address for the stamp so I could give to him as a Christmas present since he just built a new house.

I give homemade cookies and a card and have given handmade candles to some, but never anything costly

No. Unless you feel you have a really strong relationship with them. People in support roles should not feel obligated to give a gift, however I have occasionally given a bottle of wine.

Last week team dynamics took a turn for the worst (even tho in each retro the team always commend each other, you would think team work is great). Team members get agitated with each other for being slow. Team members coming across rude and brash (the same ones are difficult to get hold to offer support, time is money is what someone said💰, the craziest was the client accidently sharing her whatsapp screen, commenting on people's feedback to what she was presenting OMG 😲 How was your week?

Small family law firm. We hired our first associate almost 2 years ago. Granted her first year was virtual due to pandemic but she just doesn’t seem to be getting it. Motions are not nearly where they should be to the point where we can’t even give edits, we’re having to do complete rewrites. We spoke to her and her response was that we’re not paying her to give her all. We kept her on and gave her feedback and another chance. Nothing changed. Do we talk to her again or is it time to let her go?

I feel like my work place is either discriminating against me or has me on a list to get rid of. At the expense of coming across as a jerk I stand up for myself at work and I'm not afraid of telling my work place no. Which is one reason I feel I'm on a list that my upper management doesn't like. I don't go out of my way to be a jerk but I know my rights as an employee and my work place doesn't like that. They won't let me promote but let people I've trained get promoted.

So, I got an email from him saying he wants to meet to go over my offer letter (red flag right?) I told him he can email it to me and I'll look it over and let him know if I have any questions... feels like im trying to be manipulated bc im young

I am only 4 months into being a surgical coordinator. I love the position itself however I am struggling to adapt into my new work environment. My position puts me in a place where I need to interact with my new coworkers but they are not as welcoming as I expected. There is also another surgical coordinator however I have come to find from other staff that there is a long history of her running other staff away and not fully training other surgical coordinator staff properly. Any suggestions?

Does anyone else manage a team of people who are much older than you and feel that they do not respect your direction? I’m currently feeling some level of distrust from them when I give them my instructions, and now they are starting to circumventing me out of certain conversations by only speaking to the newer resource at my level. It’s annoying as I’m the one who’s been on this project much longer and has a better understanding of what is going on.

I'm thinking of freelancing while on maternity leave. It's not in violation of my contract with my full time employer but would you tell your manager and HR?

I have a brand new person on my team- she is totally new to the field, has recently returned to the workforce (solo mom of 3 teens), is very smart. I knew when I hired her that I’d have to lean in to get her to where she needed to be. She has a ton of potential but lacks experience in a professional setting. I need to help her level up her written communication skills. Any suggestions on books, resources, strategies? She is learning by doing and takes feedback but I want more supports for her.

Is it ok to be short and direct in an email? Do you ever do that with colleagues, admin, or parents? Or do you always take the time to add niceties like “I hope you’re well,” and “I’m sorry to reach out about this again” and “thank you so much for your perspective! I really appreciate it!” — before just stating your stance, reiterating what you already said, or asking a question?

If I foresee a move to a new city in a few years, is it better to be proactive and lateral to a firm in my current city that has an office in the city I plan on moving to? I wonder if it makes sense to take advantage of the hot lateral market now, and then just switch offices instead of firms when the time comes. Thoughts?
