do you “go green” and pass on room turndown service? The points benefit is negligible (250 per night at Bonvoy) so really just dependent on your moral compass.

Lets be absolutely clear. This has very little to do with green and everything to do with cost savings for the hotel. In fact i use this as an interview question for jr staff - asking what a major chain saves in a year through the green program. Even with the most conservative estimates its a huge number. There may be some environmental benefit but its negligible. The industrial machines used for laundry handle thousands of towels a day. A few hundred more and a few ounces of detergent make virtually no discernible difference. Hours saved for staff cleaning as well as folding the towels is the key to the biz case.

like

Yeah I initially assumed the “moral compass” part of the question referred to the program resulting in less money and fewer jobs going to housekeepers.

I used to go green but then I had a chat with a cleaning lady, and basically that program means less work and less tips from them. She said they cut down on staff. So since I prefer not to be part of poor people making less money and losing their jobs, I stopped going green. I'm also happy the tip money goes to support a single mom. That's my moral choice

Could? Yeah totally. And I do feel bad about not leaving any tip at all, but not bad enough to go out of my way to start carrying cash. I wish Marriott would let you tip through the app.

I always go green. I really don’t see the need of room service during my short stay.

like

Nope. After a long day at the client, I feel happy and refreshed to see a clean room, bed made up, and a tidy bathroom with new towels.

like

Yes, because the number or times my door has been left ajar/unlocked by cleaning service is astounding. It’s quite unsettling to come back to your hotel room to find the door slightly ajar and hoping your stuff is still there. It’s particularly bad at Courtyards and Residence Inns.

like

Due to my moral compass I actually do not do green choice. It actually takes more water to clean a room after a couple days than each day individually and many housekeepers are losing hours and wages due to green choice.

like

Plot twist. Carry on

I get a 1000 points a night at my hotel. And yes I do it but more cause I don’t want housekeeping every day. I’m pretty clean as is so usually all housekeeping does is retuck my sheets (which I don’t want) and throw away bags they think are garbage which are in fact there for me to store shoes in.

like

I always do it. 250 is negligible until you’re traveling 150+ nights a year for 6 years.

like

Revolt, make them up it to 500 points a night. They save much more than the value of 250 points

like

It’s only 250 at low end properties. Marriott up is 500. On the value - doubt its really cost based pricing 😂

I flip back and forth, but if I have a kitchen then I’m letting the cleaning service come and do the dishes.

Yes always, it’s not like at home I would have my sheets cleaned every day either

Yes, green choice always. Rooms always come with at least 3 towels, so have a new one for each day. And the sheets are fine for 3 nights. Only painful thing is remembering to get coffee pods for the mornings, but I'm used to it now. (And yes, I need my coffee right when I wake up) Miss the SPG greenchoice though. Those were some good chunk of points.

I feel guilty when I don’t go green. I don’t change my sheets everyday at home, nor do I do that for towels (though there are plenty of towels enough for an average stay without the hotel replacing them)

I did with SPG but not anymore. 250 points are a joke so I’d rather not contribute to housekeepers missing out on wages. Btw, they don’t wash towels and sheets every day unless you request it, not sure what everyone here is on about.

Green except when I’m vacation!

Where I’m currently staying they replace my towels and give me points even when I have the sign on my door... 3 weeks running

Are you also getting the points bonus? I had that same experience once, and it turned out their system didn’t have me marked as participating in the green program despite the sign on the door. As a result, they kept ignoring the sign, cleaning the room, and keeping their points

i always do it. Id rather not have random people (workers or not) come in while my stuff is around and theres enough towels to last my stay. So 250*10weeks of*3day trip avg = 7500 extra pts per yr

10 weeks of travel? Are you hiring?!

I choose it. Helps a little. And if everyone does a little it adds up. No need to clean an entire bathroom I may have used once.

I hate re-unmaking my bed so I do.

My dad is generally supportive of me, but downplays my accomplishments and treats my confidence like arrogance. He barely acknowledges my wins and can be slightly (but not overly) negative. He does say he’s proud of me once in a while, but I do feel like my feelings are often invalidated. For what it’s worth, he’s an Asian dad and will always see me as his kid rather than an adult.
