Hi Guys, how are you?
Please recommend some good self help books!
What do we think?
Having expensive objects and being financially savvy are not positively correlated.
You’ve got to decide what’s more important: 1) the personal emotional charge you get from wearing your expensive things, or 2) practicing the subtle art of putting other people at ease. In a professional services business, I’d vote 2), but that’s just me
Couldn’t agree more. You work for the client and if you feel like the way you are carrying on is an “F” u why not avoid it.
You can wear expensive jeans and sneakers if it makes you feel better
“You see this watch? This watch costs more than your car!”
Coffee is for closers...
You gotta blend in. Jeans and sneakers with a button down... at a semiconductor company.
Wear only your best stuff and let ‘em know who’s in charge!!!
Weird flex
You definitely are - sure, you can build rapport, but you are probably making it harder than it needs to be
There are a lot of expensive options that won’t make you look like a dbag— just think conservative. Smaller vintage dress or diver watches, darker brown or black derby dress shoes, shirts and pants/jeans that have been tailored for you. None of these scream- look at my money. But the client will notice you’re well put together without being showy.
Nobody at client site cares about a watch or shoes, or thinks dressing up is a fancy watch/shoes, this is in your head. No need to ‘dress down’
If you think there are no social/fashion norms at your client, you probably haven’t been paying attention. Once you dial up your situational awareness, you may still decide to flip off the norms, but at least you will be doing it intentionally
I live by the +1 strategy. Whatever level my customers are, I try to only be one level above. In a simple way to explain if customers are slacks and polos, I’ll wear slacks and an oxford. But I’m also in IT consulting where most people don’t care what you wear I just feel like if I come in dressed overboard customers will look at me as a sales person opposed to a consultant
Roll in in your lambo, that'll show'em how financially savy you are incase they didnt notice
It’s not a fashion show so don’t go nuts. Do right by the client and fit in. Get fancy when you take your girl out on Friday night.
You do you OP. I wear my Tom Ford tux daily to my paper manufacturing client and nobody minds. I do dress it down by forgoing the cummerbund and switching my yellow diamond cufflinks for something more pedestrian though.
Well let me rephrase. The dress shoes I buy are comfier than most and better quality leather therefore cost more. I am also a big fan of watches and don’t just buy a Patek or ap since in high demand. But appreciate the history and a watch makers work to make a Rolex or a jlc. I apologize as I know this thread seems very douchey but how much do I need to ‘dress down'
Well, at least you realize how douchy this sounds..
If you can’t make any accommodations in your personal style to blend in better within a client’s environment, then maybe client services isn’t the best career path
Water whatever you want!
I don’t think people care or even notice half as much as you think. Do whatever makes you happy.
The shoes, unless heavily branded are going to be fine. Watch just leave at home or in the hotel
Who are your clients lol or what the heck is IBM paying these days? Most of our clients get paid more than our VPs. I guess it also depends on your client. Go work in O&G and you’ll fit in. But you prob lose out on TMT and a few other clients.
I dress down without a tie everyday. I dont mind it and kinda like it too.
