It’s irrelevant whether they can actually verify it. You have an obligation to be truthful and candid in your application. The fact of the matter is, people who are dishonest on their bar applications don’t deserve to be lawyers.

What a man does when he thinks no one is watching says a lot about him. I don’t think poor character is something that should be normalized or something anyone should be proud of, especially not in our profession.
Mine didn't ask for contact info for my landlord. Is that something maybe specific to your state?
In regards to the tax thing, I think the bar should 100% get access to that info. I went to school with someone who had over $1m in student loans. She and her husband hadn't worked in 20+ years but kept getting degrees and living off the student loan money. They were living in section 8 housing. I don't fully understand it, but somehow, they also weren't paying taxes. When asked by the Supreme Court of my state, she said she had no plans to pay back the loans AND she only wanted to work part time after graduation. None of this was disclosed to her character references, btw.
She was banned from taking the bar for 5 years but somehow got it reversed a year and a half later. She was in the middle of a suit from the IRS by then.
I personally think she shouldn't have been allowed to practice. Ever. I'd be concerned about her integrity and I be worried about what she'd do with client's money.
I had mine done right after Hurricane Katrina and I went to law school in Louisiana. It was…not a good experience and almost everything was a mess. They ended up telling me I could swear in the day before the ceremony in December. (And I don’t have anything that would be a red flag other than bad timing).
