Do you guys sometimes think you’re not living life right? Like you’re some type of robot. I think the 40 hour work week + PTO constraints is a bit much.

Ideal week would be 35 hour work weeks. No weekends. 3-4 weeks paid vacation. Unlimited sick. Work perks. WFH flexibility

I just call it earning a living and building my career. Nothing bad about that. It’s respectable.

Depends on who you surround myself with. I was aspired to work long hours when half of my friends we’re in banking and consulting.

I agree guys, the firm may have a lot to do with how I am feeling. Long, long hours!

uplifting

Before consulting I worked in industry and will say that as the Tech manager for large scale implementations, I frequently worked 12 hour days and plenty of weekends. Hours aren’t that much different now.

If you don’t like what you’re doing, then you will feel like a bot. For me, even if something is a lot of hours, I don’t feel like a bot if it’s something I want to do. When I feel like a bot, it’s time to move on

Nope. I'm enjoying life.

Go live in some Swedish country. Work less, make less

PWC1, consider RSM? 35 is the stated goal. Weekend work isn’t praised. WFH is all good as long as you’re not in some product that is mainly onsite with clients

@RSM1 Which group / location are you in?

Business applications. Midwest

@BA1 maybe if you had more work/life balance you wouldn’t make that kind of mistake.

@RSM1.....uhhh....not sure what BA team you're on but I see weekend work happen regularly, most of the people I work with work way more than 35 billable hours a week, and half the time we're working when we're supposed to be on PTO. Like don't get me wrong I love working here but being realistic...no 35 billables a week isn't really the goal it's the bare minimum. That being said we really do try to make sure people aren't overworked but...I think most consulting positions are gonna have you working long hours.

RSM 2, I don’t disagree. I wouldn’t say we have a culture of grinding 60+ hours out of people regularly though.

^ that's fair

I started last October as a junior (moved over after 3 years in B4 accounting). Have worked nearly every day since then except for the occasional Sunday when I decided to blow off work I probably should have been doing. I desperately need a vacation, but have no clue what that even looks like with Covid, WFH, and Biglaw life in general. It also feels super hard to take a break because it seems like no one in my group ever does. Not sure whether I'm posting to gripe or seeking advice...

My dad is in his 80s and just had a stroke. He is in the hospital getting better one day and worse the next. My job has been really understanding and are giving me time off, but I recently started there and don’t want to feel like I’m taking too much time off. I’ve been off my last billable project for about a month, but my firm has had me putting in full days to work on important internal initiatives and business development that are being taken very seriously, and that include deadlines, etc. very similar to the work I’d do while on a project. Is it likely I’ll be laid off if this continues for another couple of months? How long do you think my firm might let me stay employed like this if they continue to have this much non-billable work for me?
