do you have a strategy for your AGI during tax season? Do you try to lower it intentionally for lower taxes? or do you keep it high for other reasons (please specify)?

I’m single. I maxed out 401k for deductions and did a bit of tax loss harvesting. If you have a home, you do a ton of deductions from mortgage interest to deppreciation

You do not take depreciation on your personal residence. Mortgage interest and property taxes are the most common itemized deductions. You could also strategically make charitable donations.

I’m single and rent an apartment, so I just use the standard deduction and HSA to lower AGI. My retirement accounts are all Roth at the moment

Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…
