I was just offered a CUNY role. The title is Higher Education Assistant. According to Glassdoor, the average annual pay for that role is $83,418. However, I was offered $62,500. I requested for the minimum annual salary to be 75k. Does anyone have experience navigating the CUNY system and their pay?

Manny Maceda & Alex Liu.
Alex actually did a Q&A on fishbowl a while back and it was really cool to see him address diversity, his experience navigating the workforce as an Asian-American, etc.
Alex is great! Truly authentic
Happy to see that only one person mentioned Andrew Yang. Absolutely would use him as a model for his drive and passion, but I’m now using him as a case study for how the model minority myth fails us.
Yep, that’s what I was referring to
Pro
Daniel Inouye. Won the Medal of Honor for combat actions in WWII that cost him his right arm. Then went on to become US Senator for Hawaii. The Honolulu airport is named after him.

Yeah, and his unit, the 442nd Infantry Regiment, is one of the most decorated in US history. It was a segregated unit exclusively made of Japanese-Americans, but it fought in some of the toughest campaigns of the theater and liberated parts of the Dachau concentration camps. Definitely worth at least looking at pictures of them. I’m not Japanese myself, but it still makes me proud.
Andrew Yang
I liked him at first but then heard he wrote some piece about us needing to be more white. Need to read it for myself and see if I still feel the same
Jeremy Lin if he acted more like Allen Iverson and less like Jeremy Lin
Respectfully, your role models should be your parents, friends, relatives. or anyone you know personally that exhibits extraordinary character. It doesn't have to be someone famous.
Yeah you’re right - I personally rank my parents above everyone I listed. But it would still be nice to an Asian Michael Jordan to have backpocket
None outside my family/friends.
In terms of famous Asian role models, most of them would be from Asia rather than America to be honest

Agreed 100%. If you’re Asian American and only look to American role models, you will be limited. Important to stay close to your culture
What is everyone’s opinion why there aren’t more public Asian American role models? Are Asians in the US less risky/ambitious and take the safer route? Is the system too hard for us to break through/make impact? Are we just too comfortable/have a good life here so that we don’t rock the boat? Something else? What would it take for us to groom the next Obama? Oprah? RBG?
Parents also want their kids to have money to take care of them when they get old.
Michelle Kwan. Got her bachelors after she retired, became a public diplomacy ambassador, and now working on Biden’s campaign. I hope to also become a diplomat for U.S.-China relations.
In terms of having a “high (global) profile,” Satya Nadella (Microsoft), I.M. Pei (architect), Maya Lin (designer of Vietnam Vet War Memorial), celebs Chrissy Teigan, Ali Wong, Molly Yeh, entire casts of Crazy Rich Asians and Parasite...
Lee Kuan Yew I know he is Singaporean

Duckworth is amazing. My fingers are crossed she wins Biden’s VP nomination. A Midwest Senator with military heritage and no political baggage unlike Harris or Warren.

Such a cool call out. Thanks!

Sandra Oh, but I wouldn’t necessarily put her at the level of the people you listed. Nonetheless, still love me some Sandra!
I made a list recently to inspire myself, though admittedly it is quite narrow in scope (East Asian females)
- Rowena Chiu (spoke up about Weinstein at great personal risk)
- Yuna Kim (figure skater, 2010 Olympic champion)
- Michelle Phan (self made multimillionaire entrepreneur, 1st gen college grad, father abandoned her + her single mom worked in a nail shop)
But yeah to your point, wish I could think of more off the top of my head
To add to the discussion BCG2 and D2 - they talk about the glass ceiling being the bamboo ceiling for us. The processes and barriers that serve to exclude Asians and Asian-Americans from executive positions on the basis of subjective factors such as "lack of leadership potential" and "lack of communication skills" that can’t actually be explained by job performance or qualifications. Just waiting for someone to break through!

There are a few, but most of my Asian role models are outside of America. There are a lot more success stories, history and significance with the selection outside America. Everything from famous world leaders, philosophers, inventors, and movie stars.
It's interesting that no one mentioned Bruce Lee. He had decent martial arts and movie star appeal in the US, but then turned into a caricature and used to make fun of Asian males. Now he's mostly properly respected again by american society. His popularity and appeal changed over time. That's my take anyway.
I'd put Jensen Huang (NVIDIA) up there. The progress in GPU computing has been huge for ML, autonomous vehicles, cryptography / crypto currencies and of course our beloved video games 🎮
