Do you have to get a pay cut if you move in house and if you have already get paid market in law firm? Any example that in house pays more than the biglaw market pay?

It’s rare that any in house role will pay the equivalent biglaw market salary, particularly if you’re looking only at base and comparing years of experience.

That being said, benefits are often much better; ie, 401k matching, lower contributions to health insurance, bonus/equity varies widely, etc. so it can be difficult to do a true 1 to 1 calculation.

You do realize you’re in a bowl full of in-house lawyers, right? LOTS OF PEOPLE want these jobs. Heck, lots of biglaw lawyers want these jobs. I’ve been in house for going on 4 years and I still don’t make what I made when I left biglaw. It might surprise you but a lot of us see beyond the compensation within a few years of being in the meat grinder that is most of biglaw.

smart

I took a relatively small pay cut to move in-house, and work about half of what I used to work at about 1/10 of the pressure and stress. I’m also fully remote now. It’s a pretty solid trade off, and I’ll get back up to my BigLaw TC within a few years.

D1, do you mind sharing the strong compensation package?

I make more in-house than I would make in big law for both this year and next year (take home with the benefits not TC for next year), but after that who knows since there isn't lock-step comp in-house

Been in house for about a year. I just found out that a new hire who has 1-2 less years of experience than me (but will have the same role/title as me) received a compensation package significantly higher than me, mostly due to the market dynamics with law firm associates’ compensation being ratcheted up the past year. Can I ask for an equitable raise mid year? And if so, how? I got rave reviews but an immaterial pay bump (3%) at year end in December.

Been In-House for 2 years now. Doing primarily Employment Law. I was offered a position at one of the Big 4 L&E Law Firms at a smaller office, my salary would be exactly the same I make now. I see a lot of posts out there about huge salaries and whatnot, but I can’t help but think the things I do most days don’t really require a law degree and can competently be done by intelligent business minded folks, such as contract drafting/negotiation and strategy development, and as such I am overpaid. After ten years of doing this work, I struggle to define what special attributes I bring to the process since it all seems so simple. Just wondering if anyone shares the same feelings.

I went in-house 3 years ago. At the time, I was interviewing with 2 companies. One company was a much better cultural fit for me and I was 1 of 2 finalists. But they chose the other applicant. I got the other job and have been there ever since. The work is ok,but I still struggle with company culture daily. 3 years later, the original job that I wanted has been reposted. Reach out to the GC directly to show interest? Is it worth moving from a comfy job just bc I think the culture will be better?
