Well-off client not over their spouse had previous counsel that didn’t know their head from their ass. So client is micromanaging us since we substituted in. Just got an email from client: “I need you to work this case like it’s your only case.” Oh, ok. If you pay your bill like it’s your only bill.

How easy would it be to transfer to family law? Have minimal exposure as assistant before law school but have only done civil defense lit since grad.

Recommendations on billing software? We are moving away from Timeslips. Practice management software like Smokeball seems like overkill, and I need something that integrates with Quickbooks and Timeslips.

What’s a good starting salary for a newer attorney? I’ve never worked anywhere but in the public sector (even before becoming an attorney). I’m not ready to leave my current role but I have no idea what to consider as a reasonable salary. I’ve been licensed a year and this is my first law-related job so I’m a complete newbie.

Family law associates - how long have you been practicing and what is your comp structure?

Thinking about bringing in other solo attorneys to my practice. I'm thinking about charging them 25% of whatever they make. In exchange, they would get all the clients that come in (which is a ton), legal assistant, receptionist, free rent, and free office expenses. They basically would be running a solo practice with zero overhead.

Is 25% fair? Thoughts?

Is it important to offer support staff that speak a foreign language or is it sufficient if the attorney can communicate with the client? We had one bilingual paralegal and another who is not. The bilingual one left us some time ago.

Thus, we are left with one who can’t communicate with about 25% of our clients. And there just isn’t enough revenue to support two paralegals despite my partner pushing us to hire.

How do people deal with a really crushing, can completely, unfair loss? Filed a motion for temporary child and spousal support and the judge ordered my client to pay more than his salary. Obviously will be filing a motion to reargue and possibly an appeal. But those take forever and in the mean time I have a very upset client. It’s such a misapplication of the law and a horrendous judge but it’s hard to explain that to the client who is obviously very upset and can’t understand how this happened
