Union elevator constructor in NYC makes more than a senior manager when you add in overtime, which is abundant in that field. It is also back breaking and extremely dangerous.
Most importantly it’s uplifting work!
Electrician in NYC makes more than 2nd year senior... so it all depends
There’s something to be said about sweat labor. It’s good for the soul in my opinion. My dad and I have partnered in a real estate property. I’m bringing the sweat labor during my vacations and weekends. Feels great to work on an asset like that. So if you respect that type of labor, it can give you a better sense of pride than finishing a large excel work paper.
I feel the same way. But then think about making 50% less and the need to open my open company to really make cash.
I’m paying my fence contractor, plumber and car mechanic all more than $100/hour, yet I have some audits only making $50-100/hr. I don’t get it...
My dad did residential HVAC for like 10 years and then went on it alone. He has like 3 employees and makes equivalent of a director or new partner. He has no business sense at all either. Unless you are a partner you can get this kind of pay in just about any business if you are good and work hard.
He has no business sense at all, but started his own company, hired employees, got clients, and now makes what a Partner makes? I’d say that’s pretty good business sense
Definitely thought about it... but i have no skills :(
Could always become an apprentice!
YouTube can teach you how to do just about anything. You can learn to sheetrock, change lighting fixtures, frame a door, just to name a few. I leave important, inspection worthy stuff to contractors (electrician, installing HVAC) but I handle demo, doors, any small woodworking, and of course painting. My dad has no construction skills. I’ve learned it from summer jobs in college and learning online.
I worked unskilled labor until 28 then went back to school for accounting. I'm 30 now. If I could go back in time I'd do a union apprenticeship to be a plumber or electrician. Sitting behind a desk all day sucks, even if I make decent money. I can still apply now but my bills are too much for a $15/hour apprentice wage for the next 4-5 years of apprenticeship.
my contractor clients make millions. (HVAC client makes 5-8mil a year). they are successful but I wouldnt call them a complete anomaly. its actually an excellent career choice if you are willing to be an owner
My dad is a CFA *and* has a tremendous working knowledge of tools, hardware, and home improvement. Meanwhile, I don't even feel comfortable enough to replace a ceiling fan on my own :(
