I think it happens organically - organized programs never seem to work, at least for me. When I was in consulting they felt like arranged dates - too transactional and unnatural.
However, I am (apparently) mentoring a woman in my current org who asked to meet for coffee as she was curious about my career path and how I got to where I am, and wanted advice for a specific set of career challenges.
We hit it off, our conversations are natural and not forced. Sometimes it’s work topics (she always sends me an email in advance describing a situation where she wants to brainstorm/seek advice/etc) and sometimes it’s personal - but bottom line, it doesn’t feel forced and we have continued this even as she has moved about the organization in her career, and I encourage and support her growth. In fact, I talked her into leaving her role on a team in my divison and trying something else (a true growth opportunity ) in another division she was interested in. So far she seems to be flourishing and we are meeting again next week to talk about how her new role is going.
Yes, I intentionally check in on younger women to make sure they are doing ok and that tends to foster a relationship where they feel like they can come to me with questions. I work in a male dominated field, so I’m only paying forward what was done for me.
I’d love the opportunity to mentor a female interested in pursuing law. Given my background, I knew next to nothing about applying and getting through college and law school, let alone the bar exam, so I want to help make it easier for other women with similar backgrounds as mine get through this whole process. I really do love watching women kick a**, especially in male-dominated industries like mine, and I’d love to make it easier for the next gen of ladies to continue to kick a**.
That’s exactly how I feel! I didn’t know bunk about entering the legal field. And I’ve found myself in a male dominated area. I’m only 2 years post law school and I’m just starting to feel confident in my asking others for advice/networking/or just having a convo without being awkward and formal.
I signed up for my school’s mentorship program and it feels weird to be on the other side. But I’m trying to do things different (basically be more chill and be the one to reach out) than when I was a mentee in the program. I was awkward for sure and the mentor didn’t really help with putting me at ease. So I didn’t get much out of the program.
My default is to support and mentor the women who report to me. I never had the support I needed - I want to make sure others get it. Women need to help each other advance.
I NEED ONE!
