To give some context. I worked at a small little digital agency early in my career. They gave me the title of project manager despite the fact that I was basically a strategist w/ some account duties. Mostly because we did project-based work, and I was “managing” those projects.
Obviously project manager is a different role in this industry so I’ve changed my title there to fit what I was doing. Don’t really feel bad about it.
No. It’s fair game to maybe play up your experience a little more than it was in actuality, but don’t flat out make anything up. I know at least one person who got fired for it after being hired (not sure why HR didn’t check up until she was a few months into the job, but so be it.)
Does anyone not‽ We’re in marketing: I expect quality padding and enough spin to blackout an astronaut.
industry is waaay to small to lie. it's a good way to get a rep...
Seriously. Don’t lie. This is one of the few things that will actually get you screwed. No one likes a liar
Wait, what do you mean? NO.
Not remotely. I never want people to think I know things I don’t or did things I didn’t
I only lie on fishbowl
I changed the dates on my college graduation so people don’t know how old I am. Got a late start in advertising
I don’t lie on my resume or LinkedIn. I simply frame my achievements with both quantitative and qualitative data in the most positive way possible. Factually accurate 100%
I think this is how we get so many good “account people” and “clients” in this industry.
Seriously??? But wait, that actually explains so much...I’m looking at you, account director, who doesn’t know what “House bid” is...
I’ve changed a few titles around to be more relevant. Not really in level, just to make them more descriptive into what I was doing.
No
I only lie to my doctors and sexual partners. Resume is all true
Nope
Definitely, absolutely, not.
Don’t need to
Nope
SD1: that doesn’t feel like a lie, so much as a clarification. It sounds like you wouldn’t mind someone calling that company to ask what you did. If so, you’re all good.
That being said, my resume just has titles + client names. People just want to see my book, and know what I worked on
