Do you look down at your coworkers who left Big 4 to work for smaller firms?

No they’re probably happier than me tbh

likefunny

No. Why should I look down on anyone?

like

They’re the first people I ever worked with at Deloitte. I feel terribly insecure anytime I think of them. I don’t work with them anymore, but they also made remarks like: this service line is for bros, not women. For reference, I didn’t start in the 1920s, I started 5 years ago.

like

No if they’re at least a senior

like

Not at all. They usually make more than me and have a better shot at making partner.

like

No. People at smaller firms work just as hard. It’s a myth that they don’t. Also, I started at B4, left, and then came back. I learned a ton of things that I wouldn’t have, had I not gone to a smaller firm. People at B4 aren’t always as smart as they think they are.

like

Same amount of work with less resources. And I had less control over the type of work I wanted to do.

No I envy them sometimes. It takes courage to choose quality of life over the B4 tag on your title.

uplifting

I’ve had friends who did the same thing. They wanted to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond. They felt stalled out at KPMG. I get it, and I admired their courage for taking control of their careers and choosing something different. It worked for their quality of life too. They tell me the culture is different at smaller firms. Less back stabbing. More collaborative. I’ve spent 20 years here so I’ll finish it out, but I totally get why it isn’t for everyone.

like

If they left B4 audit/tax just to go do the same thing somewhere else - I don’t look down on them but I do wonder why they didn’t just jump to industry instead. If they left for advisory/consulting at a smaller firm - props to them. Every person I’ve seen do this is years ahead in terms of pay and career progression than their peers who stayed in B4

like

Why?

I have heard a lot of: they didn’t belong here, they weren’t cut out for B4, etc A lot of snide remarks from insecure people who lack so much personality that they make they derive their self worth by working long hours and their career.

Digital Manager on £45k at U.K. Government funded project- role is thinly stretched (due to 2 ppl leaving) and now I’m: consulting for over 130 business providing digital and social media support while handling all marketing, content creation and communications for the project. The Way to a Higher Salary? Leave.

If I had stayed in the role I was in originally and grown with it, I’d be making maybe $120k, best case. I also wouldn’t have broken 6-figures in under 4 years by waiting.

The biggest lie that companies tell you is you can grow in a firm, both professionally and financially. The only ones that grow are already the people a) getting the promotions, or b) on the sales side.

If neither applies to you, the fastest way to achieve salary growth is to leave.

Anyone made a transition from consulting to startup? I am interested in doing end to end technical projects and therefore considering joining a series A startup. What factors should I consider when making this move (YOE < 2 years) - I might be able to get 10-15% increase in salary (which I might get at my current role by the end of year) but obviously the designation trajectory is not as well defined as it is in consulting. Is it worth taking the risk?
