Do you need a cert to climb up the ranks in consulting?

LOL no. Unless you are in a very specialized niche that is cert driven, such as cybersecurity, certifications are mostly meaningless in consulting. Moving up the ranks in consulting is mostly about client relationships skills, team leadership skills, sales, and above all internal networking.

Yes, GED.

Nope, unless your practice is pretty specialized

Which specific certs would you recommend?

no

Typically, no! But it can potentially help in a situation where you are being sold against niche a service offering to a client. Having certs helps in getting your foot inside the door, some clients feel more confident with the fact that their consultant is certified on the technology or process that they need help with. While what “really”matters is your experience with solving similar problems. Certs also help with your internal branding, specially if it’s on something that aligns with your leaders’ book of business. You eventually need to see how it’s correlated to all the metrics you need to get to the next level(s).

A lot of government contracts require that the project manager have a PMP.

like

It’s a shame, too. Anyone who managed a project according to PMBOK would create a disaster. Get the PMP if you need to check the box but please use common sense.

like

Certs will help with technical knowledge but it’s the experience that’s most important. Just make sure to shadow and get on projects to gain experience in your particular area of interest.

helpful

I think it depends on what you are consulting on. If you are doing tech consulting then I would argue that you need some certs and experience to know what you are talking about. Nothing is worse than a consultant that knows less than their client and proposes unworkable solutions.

like

No. It can actually hinder your ability to move up

New perspective! Thank you!

The answer is no. Certs help you get hired by differentiating yourself. After you get hired, certs work against you by pigeonholing you into a technical role, as someone mentioned earlier.
