Do you pass the rat race onto your child? Do you feel like you have to grind to get your child the best resources, schools, etc?

yes it is important that they learn to be a snob at a young age

I have a lot of friends who started off ‘following their dream’ and are now clearly unhappy with the lifestyle their chosen career has afforded them. I do not want my daughter to be naive. Money makes life a lot easier so she will need to have some understanding of the need to earn a good wage. She doesn’t need to burn herself out, but “follow your dreams” sounds better in the movies than real life.

It's only a rat race because you're doing something you don't enjoy. I'm teaching my kids that happiness isn't defined by material possessions and therefore they can pursue their passions rather than work for money alone.

I plan on taking a year off and homeschooling my kids for a year as we travel. Yes it's expensive and yes it's a year of income lost blah blah, but it's a year neither I nor my children will regret. After 16 years of school, I think we can all agree that it doesn't really teach us that much anyways.

I think it passes on even implicitly. I was lucky growing up [read:spoiled brat] as my parents had well paying jobs that afforded a fortunate lifestyle. I realised if I wanted the same life luxuries (and the same privileges for my kids) I needed to do the same sort of thing, hence a career in Investment banking and then consulting. Im too afraid to road test an alternative way of doing things (eg non-private schools, lower cost of living etc)

Financial literacy to have a rat sprint vs rat marathon

One thing I have noticed with this is parents saying stay away from their well paying career (finance, medicine, or law) because it’s not as good as it used to be but providing no direction on what to do… try to expose your kids to as many experiences as possible so they can make the best choice as to what is right for him/her.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!

Men, would you rather your partner stay home to be the primary parent while you are the breadwinner or share responsibilities equally. Note there are only 2 options 😂

Need advice. We have a member on our team that doesn’t follow process, ignores asks, and undermines those above. They kinda go off and do their own thing, implement their own way of doing things. They are deeply embedded in the culture and are well liked by leadership. The dept head continues to praise them on calls, even when they ignore asks, push back, do not follow process. Do I say something? Do I let live? I’m new to the team and find this dynamic really uncomfortable.
