Do you personally think it’s ok to travel while wfh without reporting it, given you’re obviously still getting your work done?

I go up to Canada for short trips (2 weeks or so) to visit my family sometimes. I usually end up working a bit while I’m there and there’s never been an issue not telling my teams. I still code my time to the state I’m based out of. Obviously it’s not the right way to do it but I’ve done it across multiple firms and multiple times without any problems.

My direct report who joined the company just a few months ago recently did this without letting me know first. I found out because the “communication tool” we used at work showed that she was in another time zone. While I am super accommodating/reasonable (made her position 100% wfh since she has a 1 yo kid), I think as a professional courtesy you should let your manager know if you plan on working elsewhere other than home? (Maybe I am too old school?) Her quality of work product definitely suffered for those days she’s wasn’t wfh and my colleague (a VP) even commented that she was making careless mistakes that she normally doesn’t make (she was obviously in a vacation mode).

I disagree. And why do you care where she works, as long as she gets the job done. Mistakes, etc. - thats a performance issue regardless of where she is located. Its up to her to perform up to standard no matter what. Im a senior manager, and i dont care where my people work, as long as they get the work done and deliver quality work.

And you should also tell the checkout person that you ate a grape before buying them so they can charge you for it. Geez.

Yes....ive done it for years. Frankly noone cares

Just not outside the usa. You cant work in a foreign country

@PwC 3 "They can tell where your computer pings. So they can tell who is outside of the country" Only if they actually check. Do employers do this?

1) Reporting your location for tax purposes when recording time (if your firm requires it) - yes 2) Telling your team, if you’ll be available same hours and aren’t traveling or travel to the client would be same or less cost than your assigned office - no

like

Edit: International travel is a different issue. My response above assumes domestic travel.

With new hybrid policy, companies are adding a timeline for working outside your work country . I would recommend read that once before taking decisions. If policy accept a longer timeline with manager’s approval, you can try following it .

I think “still getting your work done” is the key here because some people who are doing this definitely aren’t

I think if you travel out of the county, there are tax implications involved. That’s what my boss told us 🤷🏻‍♀️

like

It’s not about tax implications for you. It’s about tax implications for your firm.

like

Your team should know. Especially if you will be in a different time zone so they can coordinate meetings. Didn’t think you have a team? Even if you don’t work directly with upper manager, etc. on a daily basis they still need to know your constraints in case something comes up.

like

Yes. I’m traveling to visit family and working from a different location for 2 weeks. I think it’s nice to give someone on your team a heads up, but I don’t think you have to say anything if you don’t want to.

like

I’ve traveled frequently within the US (I typically use PTO for international travel) during this last year and have worked in different time zones. I don’t tell my teams anything. I’m based on the east coast so I just start my work day earlier to align myself with those hours whenever I go out west.

like

I frequently travel within the US outside of busy season and work from different locations, but I wouldn’t work outside the US

like

Speaking from experience, it works until it doesn't.

like

There’s no reason you should have to disclose your travels if it doesn’t violate your firm’s policy and you are getting your work done. I would highly recommend checking the policy. My firm does not permit working internationally, for ex., without prior approval. I would find it hard to believe you’d be violating policy by working from a different US state (assuming you are US-based).

like

Some clients may have policies, but I agree, unlikely a firm policy.

Yea

Absolutely. Although my company is apparently adding a timesheet feature where you can note where you are on a day to day basis for this/tax purposes. You technically should be paying the taxes appropriate for the state you’re in. International is a whole other can of worms so currently everyone’s just ignoring when people work from other countries 🤣

I’m not doing it. Just saying, people are.

Yes

The tax implications -- are they meant to come into play for the occasional trip out of state or abroad for a few days or a week or two? Or only if there is substantial time spent in the other place?

For income taxes, I'll always record my location accurately on my time sheets, and I'll check the rules for my destination state, but at a gross salary of $61-73k, I never had to pay income taxes to another state unless I was there for 2+ weeks. Most states have a minimum amount - $4500 in Louisiana and $8000 in Massachusetts for example - before you start to owe anything.

Depends on your company policy and are you in the same time zone. Some companies require you to report if you are not home ... plus your internet connection may not be as strong depending on where you are.

I moved to the US on an L1A exactly 2 years ago and would now like to discuss the GC process with my employer. I am confused about this: “To be eligible for an EB1C visa you must: Have been employed in a managerial or executive capacity at a company or organisation outside the United States for at least a year during the three years preceding the petition.” Does that mean it’s too late for me to go that route? What are the consequences? Does my employer need to file for PERM?

Need offer guidance: Amazon vs. Current (a known media agency but not FAANG level Brand) Career-wise and financially, AMZN looks better over the next few years. Life-wise, current company loves me (vice-versa) and is offering great plan for my life goal: International remote job (1 year, working 60% hours, earning 50-60% new base) - I can enjoy travel with less work but also keep sustaining. Qs: Is it too big a career hit to reject a Fang brand? I did 0 prep for this amzn interview.
