The latter. Annuities don't really make sense unless you're the one selling it.

likesmart

The latter - annuities are a raw deal in most cases.

likehelpful

There was a variable annuity crisis in 2008-2009. So if that were to repeat in the 20+ years of your retirement. You could be sol.

like

I’ll do a Roth ladder and transfer to IRA and take money as needed - very low up front, giving it time to continue growing as much as possible.

like

Annuities / whole life insurance make sense if your net worth is over 10M as a hedge but otherwise the premiums are too expensive.

like

Depending on where interest rates go, annuities may make a bit more sense over the coming months. My dad bought a bunch of them back in 2006-2007 with guaranteed 8%+ rates.

smart

I will seriously consider a deferred annuity.
Excellent insurance against both market falling & living longer than expected.

3 years ago I asked for a compensation review/raise, went through what felt like a ridiculous 8 MONTH long process of defending why it was warranted, only to be told no. 3 months ago I asked again and it has gone nowhere. I should add that salary bands are kept secret and I have no clue what the range for my position is. There are a decent amount of benefits in my position, the biggest being WLB, which is what has kept me here for so long. But I’m getting frustrated. What would you do?

Are there any pros to staying at a company and getting laid off, vs. proactively looking for a new job and quitting before it happens? I.e., financial (possibility of receiving severance or any other benefits). Or is being laid off just all bad? I don’t know if my job is at risk — I don’t believe it is — but my agency lost some clients and is talking about cost cutting to be safe and get ahead of it. Fwiw, I’m ready for a change anyway.

One item borrowers shopping for mortgages get too caught up in is rate. Most borrowers don’t know how to read a loan estimate and get taken advantage all the time. Just because a lender/bank offers you a low rate doesn’t mean it’s best deal. Most cases, especially now since rates have gone up, you are being charged points for some of these lower rates in the 4s. If you don’t know or understand discount points feel free to shoot me a message and I can help you review estimate and see if can beat

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled
