Do you pretty much have to get hired from a referral at the agencies here, or do you just have to get lucky and find a job posting? I know I’m good enough to get a job, but I have no idea where to find one.

It’s about who you know. Or who you know, that knows someone. Or who you know, that knows someone, who knows someone. Or… a recruiter. But good luck with that last one.

Recruiter works but only if you have a previously established relationship with them before hand. Basically like any other connection or referral lol

Network your ass off but also don’t be afraid to do things to make you stand out when you get intros. I’ve twice gotten jobs from sending outlandish emails to CDs with job openings that showed off my personality and individuality. You’re a writer. Write them something great and unique and they’ll take note.

I’ve gotten lucky by talking to the recruiter ahead of time, finding a job opening on day 1,hitting up the recruiter about and getting an interview ASAP.

Many many years ago when I was starting out in Chicago, all my friends were getting internships and jobs and it took me a lot longer even though I had a really good book. After feeling desperate, I started offering to work for free, just to get my foot in the door and get something on my resume. My persistence paid off, as the recruiter told me, and I landed a (paid) internship at a big agency which later turned to full time. Offer to work for free if you can. They won’t do that but it will show how hungry you are.

Have a little less than 1YOE at my firm (started in Sept) - is it a bad idea to apply now or should I wait to the 1YOE mark? Would it be a bad idea to cold apply? Don't want to miss out entirely on the hiring spree but also worried about being dinged due to relatively little experience. I don't have a lot of connections at the firms but can probably pull together a referral in the next few months with some networking.

Hey 🐠, I’m trying to understand if I need to be looking for lateral exit opportunities from a compensation perspective. I’m a Manager in the M&A IT practice, 12 YOE (7 in Tech and 5 in Consulting). I am happy with the work I do and the people I work with are tolerable. New base salary is $178K starting this month. Asking because I’ve heard that people should keep jumping from one company to another in Consulting to have a competitive comp. Basically guys, is my compensation competitive?

I have a question for those at Amazon or any other FAANG organization. How does your company view transfers/relocations. For instance, you were brought in for a Sr. Mgr role in SF but want to go to DC. Is there an internal transfer portal or do you need to apply for the job? How is this viewed in the company? Thanks!

Applying to industry after 2 yrs in a data-heavy strategy consulting role, and running into an odd problem: people are automatically putting me into a "heavy-quant" box and becoming apprehensive of my fit for a business role (strategy, FP&A, etc). 2 Qs: 1. Does this sound plausible, or am I overthinking based on a small sample? 2. How would you highlight your fit/interest in moderately quantitative roles? Consultants generally like my "Context> result> personal contribution" format of bullets

I have multiple client projects. One client talks a lot and keeps going over slotted meeting times. I am frustrated because I can’t find a good way to cut the client off and move to my next meeting. I even tried extending time with him. This client thinks his problems are the most important and doesn’t understand the concept that I’m across multiple engagements. I’m sick of being late all of the time and having to apologize to my other teams. What do you guys do when this happens?
