Depends on who you are as a person, your goals, and what stage of life you’re at.
Startups are fun, interesting, and tend to offer an incredible learning opportunity. There also tend to be awesome opportunities to move around to different functions, and move up quickly. You can just learn so much.
But they also tend to be terribly run. They’re small and nimble but also lack structure and support in most cases. Because there are relatively few resources, you tend to need to work a lot and culture can really suffer. Leadership may or may not be good.
Finding a good, well-run startup with a good idea, good product, lucrative comp, and a positive experience isn’t easy.
If you’re young, up for working the hours, excited about the learning opportunity, and go in understanding what you’re getting into, yeah it can be a great experience. Just make sure you know what you’re signing up for, because it can be risky.
I've worked for a few older startups. Really a personal choice. Coming from Accenture, it might be a large culture shock with the lack of process or policies. A startup can be like the wild west in terms of role, responsibilities, and how much tools you have.
I've heard of F500 workers burn out at startups bc there's no resources. Others enjoy it because they love the autonomy and don't mind the lack of resources (tools, direct reports, budget, etc.)
I personally enjoy working at a startup because there's more variance in my day-to-day work. My MBA was in Commercialization and it basically focuses on taking new products to market. I get more opportunities in startups to do this work. The culture and work/life balance CAN be better, not always better. You're beholden to the investors / board, rather than a board supported by the stockmarket.
Not if you expect something right off the bat.. even I work multiple different projects and a job I would expect no less of someone wanting to get in on it.
Not right now in the current market. It’s good to look for stability during a recession
