Do you see yourself staying in advertising? Why/why not? Are you planning on transitioning into another field, switching to in-house, or trying to move to a different type of role? What’s your goal, how do you plan to get there?

What do you do to make a living?

My goal has always been big agency, big production, big clients. I’m slowly getting there. But I recently started to question if I’m more suited for smaller agencies that are less cutthroat and life-consuming. Would I love to win a Cannes? Absolutely. But I think I could also be very happy making cool work that isn’t super flashy or expensive.

I’m just trying to put together enough money to go back to being an art director in-house somewhere until I’m done working for good. Get the home loan down into double digits, pay off my truck, put together a decent nest egg and then step back. This is all only a paycheck to me at this point.

I’m in it for the long haul. I’m so deep in it, I don’t know if I could be “good” at something else. Being in one industry for so many years, you pick up on the patterns and subtleties to a point where you can accurately predict how situations will unfold. And I guess I’m lazy, because the thought of learning a different industry environment as well as I know this one will take decades. And I don’t really have the energy for that. I think I’ll just ride this thing out, and then eventually freelance, and then see where it takes me. Maybe I’ll go client side when I want to buy some more toys.

I have a standing offer with Accenture (AFS). Due to coronavirus, the recruiter told me they are pausing staffing of external people like myself while they take care of internal people on the bench. My recruiter said he would touch base monthly during covid, but usually I’m the one to reach out to him. We haven’t spoken since mid March, so should I reach out? I totally understand if they’re still in the same position as before and nothing changed since mid March in terms of hiring.

Fellow Fishes - How did you all deal with failure in your career. I was ambitious and smart. I was in IBM and considered to be one of the best of my class. I was fired and haven’t really found my way. I don’t know what to do anymore. 3 years after the fact, I am still at an entry level position. I hate myself for letting things get this bad but I don’t know how to get out of this perpetual cycle. I tried working my ass off but have not been able to shake off that unfortunate past.

I wanted to post this for those who see and those who need to see: I, along with you, feel dejected by my current position. But I went to an absolutely no name school and could not find a job out of college for 5-6 months. Randomly got an interview request from PwC for a position I never applied for through LinkedIn. All this to say, everyones path is different and yours will work out how it should. Everything happens for a reason, assuming you always put your best foot forward. May we succeed.

Leaving VC in SF after 4 years, spent 2 years in IBD. Got industry offer for Director level role in strategy / Corp dev M&A at a late stage pre-IPO unicorn (Series D+) at a MCOL city. 200 base, 20% bonus, additional 40k/yr options. So $280K range all in starting. I’m currently making $250K in VC here in Bay Area. Job is in a MCOL T2 city (Boston/Dallas/Austin/Chicago) so I won’t be living in expensive Bay Area. Evaluate my offer please!

In these times, if your referral bonus is $1k or less for seasonal employees you are asking for: 1. Employees who put in work to refer people that end up negotiating a part time option don't work on referring anyone else. 2. If the potential new hire gets an offer, employees have 0 incentive to convince them to accept it. This can even lead to them giving negotiation tips which get the new hire a $5-10k higher offer. They may even recommend accepting a diff firm's offer straight up.

Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...
