While my frugal roots think it’s excessive, after moving to Boston for my spouse’s job, I think it’s reasonable.
In a HCOL area it’s reasonable and affordable.
Shouldn’t be this way, but Amazon 1 is absolutely right. Assuming HCOL area, unless you know someone or have rent control, 4K is about what it takes to live close to your job in a decent neighborhood in a rental that’s nice enough to not have to worry about things breaking down all the time (assuming you need more than 1 bedroom). Expenses are obviously important to FIRE, but so is stamina. You won’t be able to keep up the energy for saving if you’re having to compensate for living in a tough-to-manage rental.
False dichotomy. I think it is both excessive but also most likely affordable.
What 4K gets you in NY is a decent 1 BR. Maybe a 2 BR in outer boroughs. If I lived elsewhere I’d spend less (currently spending a little less than that on similar income OP)
I comfortably afford $4k rent on $215k salary (TC $250k, our HHI is the same). This bowl likely views it as excessive though.
thanks again!
Is buying not an option on that salary?
sadly nope. housing market is bonkers
Very very reasonable
Our mortgage is 5300 on 350 and we still save/invest 60-70K year so yes
Depends on where you live and how big the place is but I’d say that’s reasonable given your high income. I live in Boston and have friends who make $150k who pay $3.5-$4k for tiny studios or one bedrooms.
Enthusiast
Seems somewhat excessive.
If you plan to lower your rental costs after early retirement (perhaps moving to lower cost location) then it matters less, otherwise you are adding a few years of work to cover the cost.
It’s only excessive if you think it is. I can afford a Porsche but I drive a jeep because I think the Porsche is excessive. My friend is a car person and drives the Porsche and I make no judgment for that.
What city, household size, and square footage are you getting?
You make 370k and you wonder if you can afford 4K rent? The answer is yes. Also, 4K will get you 1 bedroom in nyc and that’s a reasonable price…
I know I can afford it but was wondering if it’s excessive (per the OP). Helpful to hear some think it’s reasonable
I’d be comfortable with 4K at $150k HHI. 100% depends on what you do with the rest of your income as to whether it’s a good idea
