Do you think accepting a dream job offer with the annual 2000+ billable hours requirement and raising 2 little kids (4 and 6) is doable? Boyfriend works full time (with trips) but helps out. (Cont.)

Just forget sleep. But kidding aside, I think you can do it. Honestly, women are resilient. If you have a supportive boyfriend who puts in his share and doesn’t mind putting in more on days you come up short, I think you can do it. If it doesn’t work up and you’re unhappy, you can always find another job.

For whatever it’s worth my mom was doing at least 2000 hours when I was a kid. Yes, I remember her being around less than other moms. However, when she could make it, it was all the more special and she committed to being 100% focused on us when she was there. She also would take a half day every other month and volunteer at our elementary school. At the end of the day I saw her as a role model and wanted to be like her so now I’m a lawyer too.

My kids were probably 5 and 7 when I interned at the ACLU during law school and i brought them to events. They loved it and remember it. I also had opportunities to bring them to bar events as they were older to see interesting speakers. There can be some cool things for them to see and experience. Also I have a coworker who brings her kids - same ages as yours - to the office some weekends and they love it. As long as it’s not all the time.

I bill a little over 2000 and have a two year old. I do drop off in the mornings and my husband picks up.
However, he travels seasonally for work and will be out a week at a time, which means I then pick up too, so I leave at 5 on those days.
I just make sure that during the time I am in the office, I maximize every billable minute I can- work through lunch, try to close my door to limit distractions, and will alert my paralegal to the time I HAVE to leave so everyone is on the same page and there won’t be any last minute surprises.
My little one is in bed by 7, so if there’s anything left to do I can work at that time.
Is it hard? Yes. But is it worth? Definitely. I feel like I have the best of both worlds. It’s not an impossible task. Like anything in life there are pros and cons.

I have a 6 year old and bill 2100+ every year. I can’t be at everything but my firm has some work from home flexibility so if I’m not in court or at depo I can volunteer at the school for an hour or two. Weekends I’m almost 100% devoted to my daughter but I work at night after bedtime. Now that she is getting homework we just do our homework together. Obviously I can’t do what stay at home moms do but I make the most of the time we have. Plus she has a great female role model that hopefully will encourage her to be an independent woman. I will also note that my husband is amazing and truly splits the work. Also my daughter Ioves her day care so its easy to drop her off there. If it’s your dream job then go for it!

Are there other associated you can talk to and ask about the day-to-day of working at the firm and on this team? Get more insight about the partner’s managing style, your potential hours, career progression, etc.? You could potentially ask for it as an « informational chat » to get to know the firm better as you weigh your decision.

I think you should do it. As a working mom you’re going to miss many milestones regardless of the billable minimums. And the kids are going to complain no matter what. I actually find that my kids need me around more now (late elementary and middle school) than when they were little. It’s more work to manage their work and activities now. Worst case you can change jobs in a couple of years and at least you will have had the benefit of the good compensation and prestigious firm in your resume.

like

My only reservation against this offer is that I will miss the important milestones in the kids’ lives, miss their practices, recitals, but most importantly, the sweetest age. Are there examples out there of moms who actually spend time with their kids at nights and on weekends with this billable hour requirement? Thank you in advance.

Do you have a nanny or family part-time help?

Her kids are 4 and 6. They already had their first steps, and some of the hardest days are behind her.

I think you CAN do it. I went to law school with a 1st and 3rd grader, and straight into big law from there. I did have some conflicts, but I also found ways to be meaningfully involved in their schools, to be there on holidays, and to create memories.

One important thing to check out from associates at the firm is how flexible the firm is about working from home, and face time requirements. Very few places still have face time requirements, but some do. If you can be at the office from 9-5, and go home and put your kids to bed and then work a couple more hours, you can meet your requirements.

My girls are now 23 and 21. One is a paralegal in big law (I think she exceeded 2000 hours in 2019) and the other is applying for similar jobs. All I did was set their norms for their lives going forward. Lol

You describe it as your dream job. What makes it your dream job? What are you looking to change in your current job? Will the pay allow you more flexibility down the line and alleviate stress around major expenses e.g. college tuition? Fwiw I grew up with a mix of my mom and babysitters at home while my mom was working (my dad always worked longer hours). I never wondered why my mom worked or felt sad about the babysitters. They were great babysitters and my mom loved her job. The idea that she should have spent more time at home with me instead of working never crossed my mind. Honestly if I ever enjoy my job as much as both of my parents did I will be a very lucky person.

Thank you for your post. It’s a job that’s a combo of coverage and lit at a large prestigious law firm with the office not too far from home, good compensation, many opportunities for growth and advancement, and a seemingly cool female boss. I have other comparable options, like in-house, which do not require billing. My kids often ask me why I have to go to work and say they wish I were the teacher and could spend more time with them. They say they miss me. I understand I’m the adult and in the long run, they will understand my choices, but I want to make the right decision for myself, which will inevitably affect my family.

Have an offer from PWC AC BG as a Sr. Assc. for 12.7 fixed. My friend works at PWC and told me that it is very likely that there'll be a permanant WFH.

I have a offer from RSM for 13.6 fixed in Delhi. Is there any polite way that I can ask the HR at PWC to match the offer ? My friend told me not to be aggresive about it.

Some other questions:
1.) How's the WLB ? My goal is to leave for international MBA in 2 years.

Hi, I have got an offer from PWC for Data analysis. Based on the online reviews I got to know that there is no work life balance at PWC and work is little stressed. But at the same time getting an exposure from one of the big4 is also a very good add-on. Just wanted to understand PWC's work culture, benefits and so on

I was promoted early this year from an assistant “hourly” role to a managerial “salary excempt” role, but my old job hasn’t been replaced and it’s been 5 months. It’s an unfair workload and assisting someone else takes up so much time that I can’t learn and develop in the managerial role. And I find myself constantly working overtime and not getting paid fairly, even with the pay raise I got when I was promoted. I want to send my employer an email saying they’re in violation of FLSA.

Is it bad to leave an agency you just joined? The position/work/culture is not what I was told in the interviews. It’s not been easy on my relationship or mental health. I kind of regret leaving my last agency.
