do you think Ai is taking over designer jobs? what field should we switch into (study more about how to work with Ai)?

I use Midjourney and AI tools A LOT for fun and I don't see any of them replacing us. But people that can use these tools over people that can't? Yes. I like to use Midjourney in place of stock photos for my comps or presentations. It saves me a ton of time weeding through crappy photos.

@Klick I hear you don't need to worry about legal issues if you just pretend they don't exist and carry on doing whatever is most immediately expedient!

A dystopian take. But i think human work will have no value. Everything will be automated and eventually we’ll be batteries for the machines that run our world. But they’ll let us have nice dreams in our pods.

like

I dunno man, they used to have offices full of women working as human calculators computing looooong calculations by hand before we had computers. Now everyone has access to calculators in their pockets. Making the world more efficient doesn’t mean there isn’t work to do, it just means the work shifts into something different, and frees us up to do more interesting complex work.

Not as it is now (AI can’t even create hands correctly still). It’s a tool like photoshop - photoshop hasn’t taken our jobs. The biggest threat I see is actually in client relationship management because AI gives laymen the sense that they can DIY things and that design is fast and easy, when it isn’t. It adds to the list of misconceptions about the value of design we all have to deal with

like

Yes, looking at the work and the principles of how ai creates images, i dont think my value as a designer will diminish. However we are dependent upon employers and I have already seen the attitude "No dont waste time with these just use AI" in many scenarios.

like

If you work in creative, learn image prompting.

If UI/UX, I believe the future is dynamic interfaces. Learn the foundations of AI logic. Input/Output.

like

Bingo. ☝️

Anyone who says "you just gotta adapt and learn the tools, maaaaaan" is ignoring the fact that genAI is explicitly designed for people with 0 skill or taste to get something beautiful with minimal effort. Using it better gives you a slight edge, but that edge will shrink. It's not designed for people who want high degrees of control.

like

It will replace stock imagery more than anything

Anyone downplaying the impact of AI on our field is in denial. I think it’s still a ways off before it starts replacing higher level designers - but it certainly is going to alter the way we work.

It would be wise to embrace any and all new tech and to learn the tools to the best of your ability. I would imagine as these tools evolve, we will be expected to do more in less time - a trend that has already been happening for a while.

As technical abilities become more democratized with AI, the designers that think conceptually and strategically will stand apart from the designers that are more focused on the craft. Just my two cents.

like

I agree with you. I believe that our roles will change towards being more focused on brainstorming, ideating, and even using usability and research reports from AI, to think strategically and use AI to do the craft for us.

I can’t see clients learning this tool. Just like o can’t see them learning photoshop. So no, I don’t see that happening anytime soon

likehelpful

Clients won't learn the tool, but what I am seeing are people who haven't worked for the creative talent use it to get followers on intagram.

The real question is what would we need to rethink as a society so that 'no job' is a good thing rather than a recipe for starvation and homelessness?

Imagine if instead of the worst day, the BEST day in a worker's life is the one where the robots replace him so he can chill on the beach and spend time with family... or in our case, create for fun instead of survival.

This is what folks are hinting at with Universal Basic Income. That's a partial solution, but hints at how big we gotta think.

I have such mixed feelings over this. I’m not only a designer, but I’m a digital painter and I know lots of digital artists are very worried. And the AI companies that are doing digital art have to get their data from somewhere… Which means they are scraping artwork off the Internet, and none of those artists are getting compensated. Neither are they giving their permission to have their artwork scraped. There’s a reason why a bunch of artists are suing some of these AI companies. I think AI could be a great tool for going into Photoshop and manipulating photos: such as extending backgrounds, etc. . But when it comes to using it for creating actual digital painting, it’s very troubling. And don’t tell me that it’s the same as artists who are influenced by the masters. Those artists that study the masters do the actual work… They paint their art. People that use AI are just using text prompts. Jesus Christ any monkey can do that. Not everybody can draw and paint.

I think generative AI has the potential to take over the menial jobs in UX, UI, and graphic design. This is really how tech advances work. It allows non experts to do jobs that formerly required experts. So product managers might some day be able to generate pixel perfect mock-ups of screens that follow a design system without even talking to a UX designer. The way out of this is to “move up the value chain.” So, we need to be more involved in strategic UX, talking to users, working on task flows, etc. The problem when these things happen 1) fewer people may be needed for the higher value work, 2) not everyone will be willing and able to move to the higher value jobs.

like

Yea and the menial parts were the worst parts of my day. Sometimes I appreciate doing work where I can just check out mentally, but most of the time the tedious stuff is mind numbing work that no one really wants to do anyway. Glad to be able to automate selecting subjects, removing backgrounds, comping backgrounds, etc.

Doesn’t feel like it. I am slammed with so much work. It has helped me with storyboarding a d pitching for sure. It may replace stock photography. But I still feel like everyone still needs the human ideas and design skills to get things done. Automated templates and things sound nice and we all try to push for them when we are designing, but we all have seen that they don’t last long. People want new fresh looks after 6 months and depend on us for that as well lol.

like

Learn the technology and adapt. It’s not gonna take jobs as long as you know how to use the new material and tools.

like

It can take presentation decks and display ads lol.

like

Omg yes I would pay money for AI to automate banner ad resizes well.

Ai will only replace commonality!

I worry about the work junior designers usually do. There are a lot of menial tasks that you do as someone starting out that help you learn to get better. A lot of that stuff can be done by ai. Then again I guess things shift. But I’m not sure what the shift looks like. And that’s what’s a little concerning.

No, but I do know that designers are using AI to enhance their work and or concept ideas, sometimes even using AI to build things for jobs. I use AI all the time to get ideas for a plethora of things. Just today I used it to create a few logos and even a concept for a front cover of a children’s book. I think copywriting could be in danger of being phased into more proofreading over writing because of AI though. It’s scary how exceptionally good AI is at writing.

I didn’t use any of the logos I generated. But they gave me great ideas and helped me move forward with a design. AI is exceptionally good at writing when it comes to short form content.

Right now there are stacks of copywriters writing headlines or two lines of copy per frame for social media campaigns and billboards and loads of other short form media. AI can do just as good as a job as a writer with that stuff. I mean the prompt is usually longer than the copy it needs to write so yeah, artists can easily bypass the use of a copywriter for that stuff. Yeah it isn’t good at writing novels but it can absolutely do those other things easily.

And yes, I’m an art director, maybe ask yourself how I got here instead of trying to insult me. I’m obviously doing something right or I wouldn’t be in this position. Take risks and stop being so set in your ways, AI is going to be an integral part of design moving forward so get used to it. ✌🏻

It will eventually. Yes

We stopped doing math by hand long ago, having calculators didn’t make mathameticians redundant, it freed them up to do more of the important work of thinking. Now we have a way to automate tedious subjective work in the same way. We’ll be wasting less time on the tedious work. Less retouching and mock ups, more thinking through ideas.

Go look at PEPSI’s latest social campaign and get back to me about this

I was getting out of the military, had no directly transferable work skills, and needed to make a living in an expensive city (San Diego). Took a job in insurance sales and the rest is history! Been in sales for about 15 years now ❤️

How do people focus in the office? I'm a first year and I've been mostly wfh since I started and I'm super productive at home - my setup is comfortable, I rarely get interrupted, and I feel like I can stay really focused in my home office.

Our SAs started today, so the firm is making us come in more often. My office set up is so awkward, screens are too small, and I'm constantly getting interrupted. Not to mention the extra time it took to get ready and commute. How do people do this?
