Do you think it is helpful to have a flirty persona in the workplace esp. if you work with mostly male superiors? i feel like my un-flirty very modest personality is in some ways a handicap...

I would stay away from flirty, but maybe try being more fun. You don't want anyone to think you are trying to sleep your way up, but don't want to be perceived negatively, either. Be yourself, but an occassional, well timed "That's what she said" or equivalent joke will let people know you have a sense of humor and won't be offended if they slip up with something over the line. In today's work environment, men are paranoid that women are looking for ways to claim harassment. The cool chicks that can have a good time and be productive in the office are the ones that will thrive over the next 20 years IMO. Also, don't be afraid to tell someone they crossed a line or you are just not in the mood to joke that day. We all have days when we just need to bury ourselves in work or fixing our personal lives.

OP, I wonder the same thing myself. I never come across as flirty and try to act fun and like “one of the guys” But I don’t know whether that is helping me or hurting me. I noticed that the guys treat the girls who are more flirty differently and seem more endearing and even somewhat loving towards them! I have yet to find a mentor and now that men are even more reluctant to be mentors to women and staying away I don’t know what to do or how to act

Be yourself and above reproach. The flirty females - men just want more and want to see how far they can push the envelope. They will respect you if you don’t flirt and are confident in your skin. I’m a male - trust me; I respect the ones that don’t flirt a lot more than those who do even though on the exterior the flirt seems like they have the advantage.
