Do you think it’s a bad time to job search? I’m currently in a role I actually enjoy with pretty good work/life balance and management that seems to like me, but the pay from what I can tell is well below market for talent, and the company is cutting costs so much that I don’t see them fixing the gap or giving us good bonuses or anything anytime soon (F500 level company by revenue for ref). That said, I’d hate to leave for more money only to get worked to death or laid off.

Are you comfortable asking for a raise? Or if not an actual raise based on your performance maybe ask them to consider doing a market adjustment?
Maybe even have some data points on the average salaries for in house in companies your size & industry and for attorneys with your YOE.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Remote Onboarding question: I joined my company a little over two months ago, and I’m in a remote role. This is my first time onboarding remotely as I started at my last company pre-pandemic. Honestly, I’ve found it lonely so far. I’ve been trying to be outgoing and meet with everyone I can, but it so far feels like I have not been included as a full member of the team. Any advice on how to approach relationship-building? Any secrets to unlocking remote onboarding?

What law firm is your favorite for run of the mill employment issues in the US and internationally (India, Australia, UK, Germany, etc.). So, who are you using and are you happy?

Would moving from a firm to an employee relations position mean that I never secure an in-house employment law position? Or would such a move better position me to go in-house one day? Newly in-house. Apparently, it was bad to offer my opinion that slightly differed from the managers, even though I was invited by said manager to review their suggestion with an internal client. We collectively discussed how to make a document better. I responded to an email that said "hey you and internal client - could you both see my suggestions (which differed from the clients). Internal client didn't really agree, so I said "can we add managers edits but keep some of clients edits"

Does anyone have any recommendations for software or other methods to track projects? I'm looking at the One Note to do and it seems helpful, but right now the volume of projects in expecting seems to be so large that I think something more advanced would be helpful. My GC also expects a weekly meeting to catch up on everything I'm working on, so obviously want to be prepared for those.

My co-worker is so resentful and competitive because I was promoted over her last year which caused a demotion on her end. People in the company still go to her for things that should be for me but she rarely corrects them. Shes still involved in the company too in a way that allows her to know secrets that I should know about but never do. I technically am above her within the company but this is how things are. I just do my job and try to not let it bother me but it does. Any suggestions?

For in-house counsel roles, does firm prestige matter? For example, would the fact that an applicant is from Sullivan & Cromwell vs, say, White & Case matter at all, or is it much more about experience/interview? Does it matter as much as law school credentials? Assuming a mid-level corporate associate seeking to go in-house.
