You’re still producing the company the same amount of value, regardless of whether you live in Boise or SF.

This isn’t a great argument. They will end up compensating you at Boise rates in SF.


Speaking from my own experience at Google, I think we absolutely need to organize. These companies have become unresponsive to employees as stakeholders in the business, which is different IMO than being shareholders. We should have a say about the values of our business and how the choices we make reflects those values.


yes, it’s absolutely fair to compensate based on location and it’s also good for society at large. it encourages businesses to locate on low COL area and bring opportunities to there they are needed. if you need to pay SF salaries in Boise you might as well just skip Boise and locate job in SF.


Supply/Demand. Why would they pay you SF salary when they can find another engineer already in Boise happy to take a Boise salary (plus maybe a little extra)? Unless you’re a superstar (looking at those L4s surpassing 1M TC), you’re pretty replaceable. SF salaries are inflated not just because of your output but because if they didn’t pay as much you couldn’t afford to live here. More remote competition will also drive salaries down.


They way I see it is that you're being paid X salary with Y differential based on cost of living at a particular location. If someone in Boise is getting paid $100k while someone in SF is getting $180k for the exact same job, it's because both of you are providing the same $100k value to the company, but Boise can afford a decent roof over their head while SF needs the extra money to not live in a stack of used needles that smells like urine.


But if your working from home and not tied to an office why does any of the above matter and not what you’re producing instead?

Yeah, this whole thing on compensating based on location is BS

I know a lot of introverted developers are hoping that we will stay at home forever. It’s not gonna happen. Humans are social animals. It’s how we built buildings that touch clouds.
