Do you think it’s okay in job interviews to say when they ask as part of “why do you want to leave consulting” that I want better work-life balance (in terms of not working wknds/overtime and travel) and I believe this role/company would offer that based on my conversations with others in addition to my skills being a fit for the role or does that make me sound lazy/too honest to the interviewer? Appreciate any insights!

I phrase it as more stability and predictability in my work schedule

That’s really good phrasing! I think I can mention that in terms of travel too thank you

like

I mention it if I know wlb is a known differentiator at the employer. Will not mention it at a early stage/fast growth start up where the *hustle" is more often than not, glamorized

You could go another way at this.

In consulting, you leave as soon as the project is up, which makes it difficult to take full ownership of the work and reap the long term benefits of what you are doing. You now want to work in an environment where all your work is dedicated to the growth of your team and the company you work for

This is worded poorly but i how I got my idea across

likehelpful

So awesome thank you

I’ve often said it’s because consulting is only at the surface level and I don’t get to own anything. We drop a recommendation and get out and I’d like to own something, take risks, and tangibly contribute to the growth of the company. Everyone seemed impressed. Never mentioned WLB.

I think travel is a legit one, esp if it’s a local job.

Idk seems like something I wouldn’t want to admit in an interview, I don’t see how it could benefit you

like

I agree with you I’m likely going to omit moving forward

like

Just focus on why the work is what you want. Interviews are about telling them what they want to hear

like

Ask them about work life balance, and let them tell you what the culture is like.

I also just want to provide more context I have been interviewing like crazy and I think this has been my go to reply bc it is seriously true and the main reason but I agree with the above how it can be perceived in the wrong way. I was in the final interview with a tech firm that I mentioned to the big boss (who also came from a consulting background) and he repeated it back to me like “okay work life balance is a give in, but what else attracts you to our culture specifically” and I did go on and share other things but I reflect now after not getting the job offer that was part of the reason bc otherwise I was a perfect fit for the role and I also felt the culture from my 4+ other interviews. Def disappointed but do believe everything happens for a reason so just moving forward and hope this post helps others in similar shoes

There are simply better answers to the question out there. That said I think it’s good to suss out before you sign up. We all know that working all the time is a band aid not a sustainable strategy.

Tell the employer that in a world experiencing labour shortage that you want to a) align yourself to a winner and b) work smarter not harder given said limited hours in a week. The old grind is simply an outdated business model.

smart

I think it’s fine to say those things if they are genuinely relevant, and clearly communicated by the firm / job vacancy.
The travel element is definitely fair and relevant. Everyone knows that consultants travel most of the time. Most other industries would require significantly less travel.
WLB needs to be framed carefully to avoid being misinterpreted

like

Yes, be honest. The need a paper trail of this to really make any changes within the organization.

Love the insights from this bowl and now it’s my turn to ask for some exit advice:
Received an offer from a series C startup that’s raised more than $100m and is backed by some big names. In the fin tech space. Offer is lower base than what I’m making now ($200k vs $240k), but up to $125k in annual bonus (vs $30k bonus now) + an initial grant of 1500 shares). What in this package would be negotiable based on your all’s experience?
