No, I don't think so. I have done really well in my career. I think that as long as you replace the happy hours with coffee chats, dinners, etc there are plenty of networking opportunities.
It has not for me and Alhamdullilah I am grateful that I don’t drink alcohol. Most often my colleagues are amazed that I have such high level of resistance and do not drink when everyone is drinking during happy hours and other events. I don’t have to worry about headaches and hangovers the next day
Not at all - Drink Pepsi or something else - you don’t need to become a sheep to excel in life
I don't care. I'm unapologetically a non-drinker. Don't dwell on the "what-ifs". Be confident about your decision not to drink. You don't have to some it down people's throats, but be confident when you have to explain. As an analyst, drinking may give you opportunities to network, but down the line, the best connections you make are from the work you did and drinking really doesn't matter
Yeah I don’t think people care, their first reaction may be a little surprised but most people are aware Muslims don’t drink, as long as you’re not boring, you should be fine lol
No not at all. I have been working 11 years in various banks and been to so many work parties. I drink Red Bull or cranberry juice or Shirley temple. Besides my coworkers know that I don’t drink because of religious reason and they respect that. And I respect them because they respect my dedication. But you def should go to the after hours and socialize with your coworkers.
Not at all- it’s like college all over again in that aspect. Most of my friends in college were not Muslim and they all drank- I never gave in; they all respected that and I never felt like I was missing out. Yes you might have awkward moments, but as long as you can handle them in a good humored way you should be fine. Just know you’re doing it for Allah and trust me he’s got your back:) Happy hours are designed to facilitate professional networking in a moderately formal to boderline informal setting. Alcohol is just an enabler for that in a happy hour context. As long as you’re a good conversationalist, you’ll score big points at any happy hour with your badass orange juice 😎
I can certainly respect the fact that most people here don't have to. I personally feel that it has hampered me. I'm a SM (in response to A3). Ultimately it boils down to the group you are in and who you work with I suppose. I just feel that by already not being a WASP it's just another knock against you.
I actually go out to parties and dance but I don’t drink. double standard lol
Nope! In fact I don’t want to work with the people whose perception of me would be impacted by my drinking habits. So in a way I’ve benefited because I notice who those managers, sr managers, and ppeds are and I don’t work with them.
It does limit you in terms of how much you're liked. You have to be lucky that the people or team you're in are cool with it and that your clients don't drink either. I don't drink, but I can definitely see it becoming an obstacle later in life. May Allah make it easy for all of us.
Yes, honestly all of these people make connections with managers and colleagues just from talking about their fav alcohol. Meanwhile, I’m posted awkwardly with my cup of water😩
Yes
EY, you can make Tawba. You don't need to do that for your career. Inshallah Khair
A1- curious as to how? And what level you are?
It hasn’t been for me, but I am a consultant-level and it’s manageable (and personally more meaningful) to network via coffee chats than happy hours. Happy hours are sometimes hard to manage if I’m not feeling social or the venue is too loud/dark (and some venues I won’t enter). I use happy hours to re/connect with colleagues and then follow up to have more intimate conversations. But my perception is that the more senior you get, the more these types of things play a role in your promotions. I’ll deal with it when I get there, but that’s definitely a thought that sometimes lingers and part of it is because many conversations are about alcohol and I’m over here like I can’t contribute to this conversation 🤷🏽♀️
@GM1 you are awesome!
I don't think so, like many have already said, you can drink something else.
I always stick to water just cause I'm cutting back on sugary drinks in an attempt to be healthier, but I generally attend happy hours, at least for a bit to get some face time with my co-workers.
Most people understand when you tell them you don't drink, whether it be for religious, some other personal choice, or a recovering alcoholic etc.
The only times I see people give each other a hard time is when they know someone drinks normally, and they're attempting to be responsible and not drink due to an evening meeting or finish up work, or they have to get home etc, and this is generally done in a joking manner.
