If you can be good at sales go for it. We are all socially awkward introverts. That's why we are in PA

My brother is in sales and has out-earned me every year of our adult lives. He is truly charismatic and hustles like no one else I know. I honestly could not do his job and be successful at it. If you think you can be successful at sales, go for it!! It’s just not for every personality or person.

My brother started out in insurance sales. He sold health insurance packages to companies and groups. Then he branched out and opened a broader financial services firm that had people with different skill sets that provided advice to clients. He kept his insurance book as well. He recently sold his financial services business and now just does the insurance part time. He’s not even 50 yet and is semi-retired.

We work in PA bro. We're already salesmen, just without commission.

I don’t think I ever met a single PA person in 5 years that could actually sell. At least not in audit.

Sales earn a lot more with generally less hours and stress (if you’re good at it). Unfortunately I’m an introvert

like

People say sales is less stress but it also means you’re on commission and need to actually sell. Imagine being in sales right now when companies are reducing discretionary spend.. at least you don’t need to fight for your salary.

like

Reminder that a large part of a salesperson’s earnings is their bonus. If you don’t sell well, you probably won’t make it. Personally I would be atrocious at it, I would never dare try it. Also my ex-roommate is in sales. Most of her department was furloughed. She took on extra work to avoid it, but her base salary was cut 40% *and* there’s no bonus. Granted she works for an international cruise company and COVID-19 is in full swing...

They make considerably more, but it varies widely. The reality is partners are essentially sales people or relationship managers and that is why they are making the amount they do.

What kind of sales are you thinking?

Yes but then you’re in sales...

For those who exit to industry, do you find recruiters lowball? They often quote a salary based on YOE and their standard pay - often lower because their salary progression is slower. 4YOE at consulting you make $120k~$150k but they quote $100k because that’s how they pay their homegrown analysts. Nobody thus far thinks 4y at consulting is worth 5-6 YOE, I’ve even met someone who only match me to their 2-3 YOE analyst because they think their program is more prestigious and want to hold me back.

I’m trying to make the jump from agency > platform (not FB…more like Spotify or Twitter etc.). I work with reps at these places as part of my job, but technically their loyalty is to my clients (the ones spending $ on their platform), not to me, working at the client’s creative agency. So it feels weird asking them for a recommendation or referral, but that would obviously be easier than applying on the jobs site... How do I utilize my “network” without making things awkward?
