Do you think that the perception of being religious nutheads is hurting the GOP electorally? Do you think they would be more popular if they ejected the authoritarian fundamentalist Christians from the party?

Answer to first question is yes. I’d say much more than the “wokism” that you keep hearing them yell about lately. This is one of most unattractive and repulsive aspects of the Republican Party, especially for new voters who are, by and large, the least religious group to hit the stage. It’s also becoming synonymous with “Karens” and ignorance. In the age of the internet, where information and consensus is prized and basically an inherent skill in those under 40 (who I’m assuming would be the target audience) so the ability to bs that ensnared the older generations so easily is much more difficult. Times change, and the older generations have shown to be incredibly rigid, hostile to change, and almost completely uninterested in adapting to change.

2nd question is no because the conservative base can’t afford to lose that portion of their base. It’s their core, and moving away from it would mean they would have to recognize facts and science, which is completely contradictory to their leverage and propaganda, which is so important to their operating and retention models. They also have an incredible brand problem, which people under 40 have witnessed the real rise of racism, willful ignorance, authoritarianism, actual worship of political figures, actual nazis and kkk makeup in their ranks that they refuse to acknowledge, actual treason, blatant corruption, legislation that purposely targets specific groups of people, and they do all of this proudly. And all of it is in very recent memory. In the age of increased social connectivity, redefining community and the human experience, where acceptance is prized and willful ignorance is shunned, the empathy coefficient of those under 40 is drastically higher than those in the older generations.

Less people than ever are attending church, even less want laws governed by Christianity. Even young conservatives are skeptical. I fail to see how the GOP will stay alive after everyone currently 55+ kicks it. Their party has zero goals or campaigns that would appeal to anyone’s daily life under 35. Conservative youth get abortions. Conservative youth have sex early. Conservative youth are no longer marrying at 20 and starting families by 21. What does the GOP have to offer us?

It’s not just hurting the GOP. The far right perversion is corroding Christianity too. There’s a great podcast on it of how American Christianity is more extremist than in most of the rest of the world - where it is liberal in outlook (compared with other majoritarian religions which are conservative).

Even if you don’t believe the theology of Christianity, the GOP platform today looks nothing like the philosophy espoused in the gospels.

I mean Don Jr is literally going around telling people that ‘turn the other cheek’ has gotten them nothing. There’s nothing Christian about Trumpism or the GOP.

They would probably be more popular if they made an effort to actually expunge the blatant racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, coddling of the wealthy, etc....

But yeah, I'm not sure evangelicalism is a huge draw these days.

They chose to align themselves with fundamentalists to get the “pro life” vote. They won’t do anything to jeopardize it. Fundamentalists believe that the ends justify the means. We see this with how willing they are to support morally repugnant people, as long as those people are pro life and against what the fundamentalists are against.

I am a Christian and I go to a liberal church. I’m not looking for democrat politicians to align with any religion. But the fundamentalists absolutely want their will (disguised as God’s) done via political power.

Republican politicians seem short sighted on this since they’ve got to know the under 40s will not tolerate the crazies. But people like McConnell and McCarthy are only willing to talk about it behind closed doors and not make any waves.

This post only makes sense in 2004. Evangelicals are a complete non-factor

The Republican party is in huge trouble. They are not winning any new support over the post election insanity. In fact, they are probably losing some (not as much as they should, but disinformation is a thing...). Moderates won’t vote GOP anytime soon especially with Biden in office. So what’s their path in 2024? Trump again? Nope. Another trump-like candidate? Nope, who could turn out uneducated whites more than trump? Establishment? Nope. What’s the path?

Anyone else conflicted about how the justice system should deal with people like the subject of this article? On the one hand this guy is charged with a number of felonies committed in connection with the Capitol riot, including assaulting a federal officer. On the other hand he’s clearly a fool with foolish parents and a mouth that’s way bigger than his heart, and I want a just system. Yet on the third hand (🤔) I’ve represented black and Hispanic (cont. in comments)
