Do you think there is still a huge gap in skills for women in Tech despite all the pushing to reduce the gender gap? why is that?

Not in skills, in the amount of women in the field. STEM had historically been very hostile (see gamergate and Lenna) to women and this will take a while to correct.

Underrepresentation starts early. There are many cultural (women are primary caretakers of children) and policy drivers (unequal paternity / maternity leave policies) that make longer term representation at the executive levels in particular a big challenge to surmount. Since leaders tend to invest more mentorship and advocacy for people that are similar to them in background and behavior, underrepresentation at the leadership levels also tends to translate to generational underrepresentation at the levels below them.

This! and the fact that there are inherent biases by people in power. I have been told several times that they think raising kids is my priority (whether or not I made that decision) and that women always focus on other things (like cat fight among other women colleagues) rather than work

It's a culture issue. I think there are folks that are more than capable enough to go into tech, the question is whether or not they're willing to do so

Gap in skills? No. Gap in experienced people? Yes. Fixing the employment funnel is hard and it will take a generation to solve.

I sit on 2 university boards in Engineering Colleges. I also sit on a University Board of Trustees. Getting women to even try entering the field is tough. Larger scholarships, introductory camps, mentoring is all being tried, but so many girls in middle and high school are turned off before they even try. Engineering and Comp Sci are the easiest entries into high pay in tech industry. Look at the AP Physics, Chemistry and Calculus populations as data points. With bias starting early, and then biases for non-technical women in the tech companies I don't see it changing nearly fast enough. India still isn't graduating women from IIT and other tecnical programs at the same rate as the men either. China seems to be doing the best, Japan gave up.

Does anyone have book recommendations on gender bias/microagressions? For context: got into an argument with my dad bc he is moving and he said he doesn’t know about the mattress sizes “because that’s something a female who is into design and decoration would know” 🥴🤮 smh idk wtf a mattress has to do with design/decoration or women and this man needs education. thanks in advance

I have a picture posted. I totally understand the confusion on my gender and I do not take offense to it. I have endured it all my life.

Hello! I am looking for some perspective. Those who have been in an arranged marriage - 1. What qualities did you seek in a partner? 2. How long did it take for you to decide that your partner was the right one when you first started talking to them (how frequently did you meet them)? 3. How important was your family's opinion? 4. Are you happy with your decision right now? Please provide your gender and experience. FYI - I am a little skeptical about arranged marriages, but I have seen it work

I hope most of us can agree on the below as fellow Americans: -Any group wanting to cause harm to people or a specific group of people have no place in our country. -Clearly our country is hurting and needs productive dialogue at the community, state, and national level from both sides. -One side is never right. MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN are also rarely right. -We’re in dire need of empathy and care for one another regardless of political views, race, geographic location, gender, etc.

Hi everyone! So I'm kinda questioning my gender views of myself and I need help and education on what I'm feeling. In essence, I can't discern whether I'm a cisgender, straight female that isn't always super feminine, or if I'm really closer to non-binary, or have fluid gender expression (is that correct?) Will add examples/reasoning why I'm questioning this below. In essence I can't tell if this is a personality trait or gender question

My husband suggested a gender reversal role play the other night (ie I (a female) dress in the traditionally masculine way and he dress as a woman) - he seemed really nervous suggesting it. In the same night he asked me to paint his nails with clear polish - is this him exploring his gender expression? How seriously do I take this? What can I do to support him if this is the case without making him feel threatened? Also, would appreciate any help in how to think about this myself as I want cont.

It was exhausting to be “on” in person the entire time. I couldn’t bring myself to go back this week. I'm in a awkward spot. I barely do anything at work while I'm very well paid (most likely overpaid) and our agency is happy with me and my partner. Until here everything's a dream. The agency is one of the most famous ones, the client one of the biggest in the world, but small briefs and small budgets. Also, our CD and CCO are kind people, but not good enough to look up to them
