Do you usually lie about your current salary when negotiating with a new employer? And by how much, 10% 20%? I resent the fact that I am even being asked. What I currently make is irrelevant.

I've made the decision not to work for a company that requires salary verification, like showing them my W-2s. My price to work for them is my price, and if they don't think I'm worth that, then fair enough. The only reason to request W-2s is to lowball your salary. No other relevant information can be had from that info since they can verify employment through other means.

No, why would you?

like

@ATK1 I guess because you are paid below the market and the negotiations will put you at a disadvantage compared to what is the range in the next company?

like

Don't lie.

like

Don't answer the question. I just say "I'm right around market rate, likely a bit higher." If they ask you for a specific number, shoot back and ask them what the range for the position is. Works for me.

I was making $75k and told them I made $120k. Got an offer for $170k

Senior Con 1 - that sounds like a bunch of BS. You're telling us you scored over a 200% increase?! Either you were ridiculously, horribly underpaid or you're lying out of your behind. Please share more details

like

I was horribly underpaid.

like

I am also ridiculously horribly underpaid. Which is why I don't want to share the info and have to negotiate from that number. It puts me at a huge disadvantage.

Strat1 - Cybersecurity at Big 4 OP - Correct. They did employment verification but not salary verification. Check to see if Accenture separates the two. If so, your background check will only require verification of employment and the time period. If you are a current employee at Accenture when the background check happens, you will literally have to authorize any release of information. So, you will know if they are going after your salary numbers

like

I always lie, in the 20-25% range. They will use it as the basis for the offer they give you, and that is the minimum / starting point in typically willing to accept for a move.

like

I believe lies are usually found out in background checks? Fish please correct me if I am wrong. 10%-20% might be ok around promotion time as you will be closer to that compensation by the time you get an offer.

Can be a dangerous game. I think a better way would be to referring to your total compensation which should put you over 10% (i.e. bonus, educational reimbursement, etc.)

C1 you don't lie in that case - you state your expectations

@ATK1 yeah makes sense, but can be tough if you are pushed for details on your current salary. Can you say no outright?

@SC1 and no background check to confirm your numbers?

You can say no, or you can say - here's my current salary, to switch this is what I expect. Why are you so afraid of headhunters?

SC1- what was your previous position? What's now?

Does anyone else find it difficult to ask for time off? I haven’t taken a “vacation day” since February, billed 185+ hour months consistently through the pandemic (exceeded hours for 2020 bonus eligibility), and am feeling pretty burnt out. It’s hard because other associates in my department haven’t really taken any time off either (or it has been a day or two sporadically). Would really love to take some days over Christmas to recharge but I’m nervous about perception.

I am having a lots of interviews for a first year association position, but unfortunately any concrete offers. I am thinking two are the reasons why: maybe they do not like my accent and how I speak ( English is my second language) or I am asking to much when they ask about the salary range. What are the other reasons that you may mention why a person is refused after the interview? Do you answer when they ask about the salary range? Do you find helpful any sources for I interview skills? Thanks
