You can get hit by a car and die tomorrow. Literally do whatever you want, whenever you want
I agree. But I hope you don’t want to be hit by a car OP
You can do it anytime. They can also let you go anytime.
It depends on your goals. You have the right to resign any time, with or without notice. If you don't care to retain relationships, just do what you want.
If you need good references, want to leave an open door to return, care about your team, etc. then that changes things.
I would resign as soon as I knew I was leaving to give as much notice as possible; try to negotiate a start date at the new place that will enable wrapping up the current engagement (if that's a reasonable timeline); definitely resign now vs. closer to or during busy season. All this is to try to make your exit as painless as possible on your team. Someone will have to absorb your workload so give them a chance to plan for that. It's not required, but enables you to leave on the positive note.
I know it's old-fashioned, but you'd be amazed how word can get around.
