Play is the child’s work when it comes to learning. Mr. Rogers said that...and so many others did to. Dropping the mic....
Preach!
I WISH my kinders could have free, unstructured playtime in the classroom, but administration won’t allow it. It’s a rigorous school and according to them, play time is just not a part of the school’s mission. I’ve been told, “They go to gym every day and that’s enough”. 😒😒
Play is so important for young children! Sad to see state and school policies view otherwise
This school year our principal advised us to have the main recess and extra recess. This allows for the kids to relax and work more throughout the day. This is 3rd-5th grade and the behavior of students have dropped. For me I call it social skills time.
Play is so important to creative thinking and social skills. I think part of problem with kids when they get to me is that they never had recess like my generation. That playground was where we learned to make castles out of our imaginations and find the teacher when our friend skinned a knee. Unstructured play is important, especially in earl childhood.
Just recess.... no play centers like dress up, career, house, free art etc.
I just went from PreK to Kinder last year. It literally broke my heart to see the rigor and the requirements that are out in a 5 and 6 year old. Play has diminished from the Kindergarten setting in most areas. I fee a little more grounded this year, so I’m slowly incorporating moment of play, independent investigation, and imaginative learning in part is my day, while still keeping up with what is required. A child can learn SO much more through play and hands on experiences at this age!
