do your parents know your salary?

I tell my parents if they ask. They have no idea what I do and wouldn’t be able to understand so knowing my salary helps them to understand how “successful” I am and is a huge point of pride for them (given they earned significantly less) Edit: I should add that my parents are immigrants so seeing what I earn helps them to feel that the sacrifices they made were worth it

Sorry, OP. I had barely graduated and my mom asked me to help with a down payment and co-sign a house within a few months of me having a salary despite being so resentful about my not going to grad school. I’ve learned my lesson since.

They know the ballpark from me telling them what I started with and vague ideas on raises. I’m starting to practice being more vague though. They weren’t great with their finances and I’m still traumatized from some of the fallout (handling bill collectors, helping them file for bankruptcy as a child) so I’m trying to prevent expectations.

oh my god exactly lol im traumatized that i essentially have a mortgage by living at home 👁👄👁

My parents don’t even know what job I have

likefunny

Same. They barely understand what I do, let alone what market salaries are for it.

like

My parents are immigrants/refugees and I enjoy telling them my income just for the mind blowing factor. They worked minimum wage jobs so I tell them so they can realize there sacrifices were not for nothing.

likehelpful

My mom’s my CPA...so yes. And they will until I want to pay someone else to do my taxes.

like

I got a C (my only C) in finance primarily due to a complete lack of interest. I am sure I could figure it out but can’t imagine when I outsource every other aspect of my life that my new hobby would be figuring out my taxes. I was also fined an absurd amount for not registering my car when I moved so I know I fail at the majority of administrative activities. Play to one’s strengths.

Absolutely not. I wouldn't have that discussion, as my parents would have little context for it. I wouldn't risk them possibly feeling belittled. When you're the first in your family to make the jump from the blue collar world, you have to think of these things.

like

My dad is a partner for another firm so we always end up talking about it

like

Which firm?

Absolutely not. Never. They would have no context for it. And given their backgrounds, it would seem extremely wealthy, which it is not. They are in their 80s and worked lower wage jobs, and haven't worked in 20 years either.

like

How much is the bonus amount anyway?!

Yep, they are my measure of success so unless they say I’m proud of you I don’t get excited

like

Yes but honestly I wish they didn't. It makes things weird and creates expectations.

like

Yes my parents are my biggest cheerleaders. While they don’t care about the exact amount they are happy that I am doing reasonably well

like

No they don’t. For whatever reason my dad gets very resentful and weird if I even talk about finding retirement accounts, getting raises, etc., even though my parents have done just fine in life.

like

Yes, they feel happy for me and are proud of me so why not?

like

This post is so insightful in all the different parent child equations. I feel for those who can’t /don’t share this with their parents. I’m proud of all of you for doing this awesome so early in your lives! You are killing it!

like

Haven't kept them current on recent raises but they have an idea.

Nope

Nah dawg

Yes, grew up low income, still help them financially. They’re proud of me even if they don’t understand the work.

Yes. And it blows their mind.

I told them my salary when I got hired in as an analyst and my parents seemed to be very proud at first (making more than my parents combined) but then… My Uncle and Father got upset I didn’t buy a house for my Uncle (that is “his” but under someone else’s name for shady reasons). It’s been two years since and things are still tense. My family is LSES but also not really… they’re just bad with money. And get weird when I mention how I choose not to spend on certain things to stick to my budget (Mom suggested I buy a 30k car, I said I rather save the money and just uber until I really need one, etc). In the future, I’ll probably share that I was promoted but not how much the raise was

Been interviewing with D, EY and Accenture at M level. Keep feeling a bait and switch to SC. I'm M currently. The feedback has only been that I "haven't worked on large enough projects" and that 1 yr as an SC to M timeline would allow me to "learn their capabilities, approaches, etc". Anyone else face this? I'm a bit frustrated. High performer, MBA... How much will this effect salary, if I accept an SC vs. M offer?

Hi all, I was offered 19 LPA by FIS for Lead Analyst project management in Mohali location. I have 9.5 years of experience and 3.5 years of scrum master experience. I have negotiated and asked for around 22 LPA as I’m holding another offer by accenture with 21 LPA (16.8 L fixed), Gurgaon locations . Just wanted to know how much should I expect with my experience and this role. Does FIS consider renegotiation once offer letter is rolled out.
