Yes you’ll be fine

Depends on your social life. For someone single and under 30, you can certainly go out a lot, date etc. and do one or two annual splurge trips with friends (e.g. spring break). Just be on a budget… you’re ahead of the curve.

Before everybody chimes in and tells you all the luxuries that will be out of your reach, let’s be clear: You can live very well in NYC on 120k. “Enough” is super subjective though: if you have a several-thousand wishlist of savings (max out 401k and Roth?), make a budget, then evaluate it against your priorities.

You and I have very different definitions of "living well"

120K in total comp or just base??

like

I’d consider trying to get a cheaper place so you have more to spend on other things (or save), but you’ll be fine.

Single 25 Making 120 and paying 1400 in rent right now and saving 40k a year without ever constraining my spending if you need a data point. $800 more a month would definitely make things not as fun. Would recommend getting a roommate for a year to get something cheaper.

Yea 40k is everything.

You’ll be absolutely fine!

Anyone have any insights into ICONIQ (hours, culture, comp, etc.)? Have heard mixed reviews so far - specifically that new joiners today have less runway (more of a pyramid today while the folks who joined 5-10 years ago had faster paths to MD / Partner and are sitting pretty). I’ve been hearing that comp is decent (i.e., I did see on a H1B salary database that base for a PE senior associate is $175K, but who knows what cash bonus / carry looks like). No datapoints on culture yet

Keep grinding? Or eff it?
Will hit 7-figure income for the first time in my life this year. Have about $2M in savings. Almost 40. Worked a lower income job before B-school, then paid down loans and saved aggressively to build up a couple in million in 6-7 years since.
Could MAYBE live off the $2M. But man, I’m tired of working. But now that my income is high, it seems CRAZY to not keep grinding and saving. But could I take a year to reboot? That feels stupid though.
Any advice?!?

Where would you say is the best place to raise a family as a gay, wealthy couple? A place that accepts LGBT but also is ok with people who have accumulated wealth and don’t hide it.

For example, Dubai is great for wealthy people but terrible for LGBT. On the other hand, Denmark is great for LGBT but terrible for showing your wealth.

Hey folks. 3 YOE, working in tech at a great company, and making 135K TC in Austin.

Have an admit at Columbia and received 30K in aid each year, so I anticipate paying 110K in tuition. With cost of living in upper Manhattan, estimating an additional 35K each year, so 180K total cost.

I want to stay in tech post MBA, but explore faang companies and product roles. Is this worth the cost? I figure I could make a jump in comp at least?

Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.
