Does an MBA add any value for investors? Playing with the idea of doing an executive MBA to help with future investment rounds from banks and/or PE firms. I know that actual business experience has the most value. My rational is that ticking the MBA box helps with trust. The added network would also help with finding money. Thoughts?

Not really. Anecdotal, but one of our favorite PortCo’s founders dropped out of HBS to found their company. It’s more about demonstrated passion, execution, and proving that you’re the best person to be solving the problem at hand.

My thoughts were that an MBA adds to the proof / credibility that I can actually manage the current and future business. Especially since it would go well with my current Msc in IT

The best thing you can do to gain trust from investors is have a track record of making money, not spending it on useless degrees

No. An MBA will not do this. It’s a generalist business degree that gives you some tools. I think in your situation it’s probably a waste of money. Just go hire a cofounder with functional expertise and experience in the area you’re missing.

It depends on the needs of the business and the team. Every team should have someone with sales expertise, financial expertise and product expertise. Someone with an MBA has some training in all these areas (or at least understand the needs), so it can help if the company doesn’t have experts in each. If a startup revolves around a well defined niche product and a few developers who can do online marketing and ecommerce, an MBA is probably not needed. If the business has some more complex business plan that requires a large or distributed organization or complex regulatory environment like fintech or healthcare , an MBA (or a JD) will help. Also every business needs someone who can at least define and document procedures and processes.

We are not s typical startup, but more of a traditional company. We are currently building our IT consulting team with plans to go into managed it services since we see we can do it different and better than current local providers.

Have you invested at all? What is your current experience?

When I say invested, meant more angel investing. Coming from IT consulting is a MAJOR lift

Thanks for your input, much appreciated! Currently, I'm building an IT consulting boutique. Plans are to add a IT services (MSP) arm in 2 years-ish. We would like to do this through both organic growth and acquisitions (hence the investors part). My partners and I are quite young and have a background in IT consulting. This makes me worried to be perceived as "not experienced" or "business savy" enough.

Does an MBA add any value to you and your personal equity? I would probably say yes if it's a good MBA. A top MBA has a strong network attached to it. That's the intangible. You could also be very targeted with applicable classes if you choose the right program.
