I thought it was quite the opposite. I was surprised at how little they requested.
Perhaps there is a variance. I was in the early census group and it was very detailed (income and stuff).
No
"Are you here legally?"
...
"How dare!"
Not really.
If you answer yes from your iPhone your level of Cognitive dissonance is staggering.
The only thing I found a little bit weird was “what kind of a white person are you?”, but everything else seemed straight forward. Maybe I could’ve done without actually providing the names (i.e., just ask for number of people and ages), because I understand why undocumented immigrants (who should be counted as part of the census!) would be hesitant to answer them.
I could understand that IF it was a multiple choice question. It was free text. Even with automated data clean up it’s going to be a hot mess to extrapolate anything useful.
I worked as a door-to-door census taker in 2010 for those who didn’t submit their form. Most people were nice and some obviously had something to hide. I only got the door slammed in my face once and it was surprisingly a pastor 😂. That’s about all the info I got out of him before getting the boot.
I thought asking for a full name and phone number was a bit unnecessary, especially at a time when data breaches are so common (and I'm so sick of robo calls).
Yep
Yeah I just felt weird filling it out. New Yorker here.
Obviously everyone and their mother has my data / information and we are all as on the grid as can be, but I hate filling out anything.
Yes I skipped it. I think it’s a surveillance tactic from the Trump administration.
Oh well, I guess as a New Yorker my default response to anything is "none of your business." Perhaps I find all questions invasive.
No
How so?
Yes. I refuse to talk to the census people. The last one tried to force me to share my parents' SSN, income, savings, etc. They don't even live in the same state as me or claim me as the provider so I told him that I was done. Be even tried to state it was required by law. Hello... Household survey? They are not part of my household so none of his business.
Sure but it doesn't change that style of the reps are shady. Census bureau purposely blankets all surveys as may require compliance by law when only certain questions or surveys are required. I don't mind helping but I also do not want my privacy invaded that deeply to include my family who doesn't live with me.
