Does anybody pay their candidates for going through technical tests? We have a take home test that can get pretty long (10 hours in average) and so we are thinking on giving some sort of compensation but we don’t know how (gift cards, cash? Do you transfer to the candidates account or do they sent an invoice?) and especially how much. Any insight will be greatly appreciated!

I would see if there’s any way to change up the take home test first. Ours has a time limit of ~2 hours. Is there no other way to gauge the technical skills?

Not really, we have had a couple maybe but our product is really cool and they like the challenge. It’s just that it’s really long and we are starting to have candidates asking for compensation.

When I hire for my company, I assign a project to candidates that I expect will take them 4-8 hours to complete. I compensate them for 6 hours of work and require they submit an invoice. We treat it like contract work and I clarify that their project might be used in our consulting work.

When we are doing recruiting for clients, we assign CEO candidates projects and those are not compensated.

like

Would you mind sharing how much did you pay?

For the invoice process, were your candidates registered as self-employed?

A lot of our candidates are full-time employees, that’s why we are thinking on giving gift cards since we are not sure how many of them will be able to submit an invoice.

I worked in self driving and we had a take home test that we usually got back in 3-5 business days. We didn't pay but I interviewed for a company that had me do an assignment. They paid me $400 to do it

Lol Amazing! Thank you! I was just told by one of our agencies that DuckDuckGo pays know $1000 😅

We don’t pay our candidates for a technical test time as it’s part of the interview process. For technical roles I’ve seen on ave for an 1 hour interview span. On another note, 10 hours assessment test is quite long. From a candidate experience I would recommend shortening any assessment lengths and expectations. An hour or 1.5 hour max. Anything longer than that you may lose candidates in the process as other company’s may not require something so excessive as part of their screen.

I see. I can understand that. Something for the company to further discuss is if that people/candidates are failing the test could they be an indication of weeding out high aptitudes, learner profiles that can quickly ramp up and learn? Especially if the role level is not a senior level. Not everyone is going to be a great test taker but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t be good in that positions. That’s a flag, in my opinion, that many are failing the test. Could the test be a wrong tool to assess for the right candidate? Just a thought and different perspective to look at other avenues (conversational, paired programming, whiteboarding exercise, etc opposed to a 10 hour test).

I am also curious what kind of position/role requires a 10 hour take home test/technical assessment? Are there other interviews outside of that in your company’s interview process?

Is a low-tech developer that will work on the video engines of the app. Lots of maths and algorithms, is not that common in Europe.

I work for a tech start up heavily focused on content (seo long form blog content)! We pay a range of $50-$250 for take home trial assignments that average 4-8 hours to complete

I’ll check it out, thank you!!

We moved away from take home after our top candidates had a higher drop out rate than our marginal candidates. After a few more insights we realized we were hiring the “best of the rest”. Once we removed our take home, the quality of interviewing candidates rose and pushed out 90/180 day “quality of hire” metrics up almost half a point.

Thanks! In our case it’s been the opposite, tbh. Great candidates are super engaged and excited with the test but we also agree that we are asking for a lot of commitment so it might be reasonable to remunerate it.

Looking for advice. I currently am happy in my current position but a hospital near by is offering 30k sign on bonus (contracted for 2 years) with competitive pay and benefits. My current director is trying to get us all pay raises, but keeps getting denied. I do think something is coming though. If I get an offer I want to allow my current employer the chance to counter offer. Being in a leadership role right now, has any one done this and had it back fire?

I've been working in management consulting for the last few years (incl working at Big 4). I studied at LSE, performed well at work and academics, and have a strong enough CV to make it through the door at MBBs. I now have an upcoming interview with one of the MBBs but I'm very nervous. I feel like I'm not cut out for the MBBs and will never be able to 'crack' the case study interview because I'm just not good /smart enough. Any advice on how best to build the confidence and take myself forward?

About to join BNY Mellon this month pune location as a Technical Lead. I am eligible for bonus in Jan 2023 or not ?

How do you get experience when no one will hire you? I wouldn’t mind hanging a shingle but I feel it’d be irresponsible to do so with no experience. Unlike all of my classmates, I never landed an internship/externship in law school - had only one interview. I was a PT law student, came from a CS background, and worked in IT throughout law school. I passed the bar exam on my first try (Oct 2020) and have only had a couple interviews out of the hundreds of applications I sent out. Any suggestions?
