How do you plan presentation timing? E.g. if you’re given a certain amount of time to present - is there a good hack to figuring out how many slides / words to prep?
Does anyone know of SE positions/companies that sell into the insurance industry? Or insurtech companies that have SE positions?

What do you do when manager blames you for something?
Me: “Hi manager, I think I got everything, can you review and let me know what you think? Happy to make any changes before we send”
Manager: “looks good! I can’t think of anything, go ahead and hit send”
(Mistake comes back)
Manager: “ughhhhh how could you do thisssss”
How do you keep up/in touch with your network? Mine barely post anything on LinkedIn, so commenting on their posts is out of the question, and apparently it's impolite to just message or email them if the job searcher doesn't have anything to share besides asking for a referral or opening. If I don't have any relevant information to share with them, what should I do?
What do you measure for engagements on FB Ads Mgr? Do you use the post engagements metric? I find this number extremely inflated and there’s no clear definition of how it’s calculated. What do you do?
This isn't about being childfree this time but is a bowl that I think is least likely to have anyone who's involved lurking. Looking for perspective.
I'm in healthcare, agency side. I have a couple of product names I've never had to say out loud until a recent client meeting. I practiced pronunciation before the meeting because it's different than how I hear it in my head. Continued in comments:
I got an offer from enphase and trueblue.
Can anyone give me some idea which is best to work, learning and environment wise and

Moving to the Bay Area fall this year from the east. I’ll be working out of Los Gatos and my wife out of San Bruno we have two kids (4 and 2). Looking at the move to the west as short term (~2 yrs) and looking to rent a place for now (2 or 3 bedroom max). Anyone have recommendations on places around the Bay Area to rent so it’s an easy commute for my wife and me (max 3 days a week in the office) as well as for a family. Thoughts ?

Just ruined my very expensive ergonomic wireless keyboard by dropping a gallon of coffee on it. How’s your day going
Big Law associates: Do you see a trend of intense “great resignation” recently? 5 people I know (a 3rd year at WilmerHale, a 7th year at Latham, a 5th year at Latham (same office, same practice), another 7th year at Latham (different office, different practice), a 6th year at MoFo) all quit in Feb. or early March. None of them lateraled (yet) and at least one of them does not plan to practice law anymore. I thought it was about Latham or this practice group before learning about the other two.
How’s everyone holding up?
WWYD: I applied for an associate position at a plaintiff’s firm that is advertising how they’re currently expanding in leaps and bounds over 7 days ago, and even got an old classmate of mine who is currently there to forward my CV and other materials to the decision makers on top of applying through the normal channel. I haven’t heard a thing. Do I reach out to the firm to see where they’re at in the process? Do I continue to wait patiently for them to reach out?
Anyone in this bowl did the CAMS exam? If so, is this an exam that can be passed without AML experience?
I feel like my billable hourly rate is way too low. I know I’m only a second year at a boutique firm but for some clients I’m billed at only $175. I also have an MBA - am I crazy to think my hour should be “worth” more?
How do you get better at contract negotiations? (I’m a 4th yr. in commercial real estate) I feel like I’m generally good at pulling together an initial draft of an agreement (ex PSAs)...but I struggle when comments come back. Specifically, I struggle with reading newly proposed language & deciding what stays, what goes, & what needs to be tweaked. Are there books I can read (or CLEs I can watch) to get better at this?
Junior associates at lockstep BigLaw firms, would you stick around if your firm cut associate salaries? Assuming the pay cuts aren’t industry-wide, of course.
You are plaintiff. One of your defendants is a “doe.” You have to move for default judgment. Can you default a Jane Doe? Or do you just fail to prosecute the Doe and default the named defendant?
I’ve had a rough day today and it’s not even noon on a Sunday. This is one hell of a profession.

My laptop died. IT needs to check it physically. I’m 300 miles away from the nearest office and 1000 miles away from my office. I’ll be driving there first thing tomorrow - if you were a partner, would you be pissed that I’ll probably have to take a day off even if I’m at an office? Is it my fault that I’m out of town?
Recommendations on books for a new family law lawyer? My friend recently started and I want to give her a book to help her out. She practices in FL if that makes any difference.
The billing guidelines for my client say they will not pay for parking or speeding tickets if you get one on a trip for them (I’m serious). Every warning has a story to tell, but I guess this is why people don’t like lawyers?
I am considering transitioning from being a W2 employee to a independent contractor/1099. What are some important questions I should ask before making a decision?
For context, I have been with my litigation firm for just over 3 years and have been barred for 4. I am doing fine, but I dislike the job and would like to reduce my hours (and get rid of some of the non billable work I have to take on). Ideally, I would transition to a job that I love, but I’m not sure what that is yet. Cont. below.
Any tips on how to keep my plate full with work? I just moved from civil legal services to Biglaw as a staff attorney (9 YOE), and I’m looking for strategies on how to get work from partners. They know I’m new and I have gotten some matters to work on, but I find myself out of billable work by the afternoon (and today, by 10am). I check in with different people each day to ask if there are things I can work on, but what else can I be doing (that isn’t going to annoy the shit out of ppl)? TIA!
That time of year... friends in the office giving me funny/cool gifts. I’ll need to reciprocate but am just brain dead these days.
What are some of the best “office” gifts you’ve received in the past?

It takes time. I remember being mind-blown that seniors could note what partners were saying at light-speed. A few years later, I can generally predict the range of what they might say and just need to take notes on the high points and can fill in the gaps with my general knowledge. It’s a daunting progression at first, but you’ll get comfortable before you know it.
Do not record. Not only are their specific privacy concerns, you are creating an exact audio record of conversations that may be produced in discovery if there’s litigation about a deal/case. Don’t put yourself in that situation.
In terms of note taking, flag for yourself where there are gaps and follow up with the partners after the conversation or as you’re working. I don’t think they’ll view you any less for being diligent about producing the right work product.
Don’t be afraid to clarify if you don’t understand something in the instructions - it saves everyone time. You can ask to confirm what the next steps are or to clarify that you understood the approach to take.
Ask for the opportunity to play back what you heard to make sure you got it. Some of us are excitable...
Yes. It gets better, though, as you become more familiar with the concepts.
Just point blank say can you repeat - want to be sure I'm getting the request down not to miss anything. Or after meeting send a recap email with your notes and the assignment and let the partner know it helps you stay organized.
For many partners the email would not be successful. Try to get the verbal playback in the moment.
