Does anyone also feel like partners talk way too fast to take notes? I try my best but always miss things. I thought about recording audio notes but I don’t want to violate privacy.

It takes time. I remember being mind-blown that seniors could note what partners were saying at light-speed. A few years later, I can generally predict the range of what they might say and just need to take notes on the high points and can fill in the gaps with my general knowledge. It’s a daunting progression at first, but you’ll get comfortable before you know it.

Do not record. Not only are their specific privacy concerns, you are creating an exact audio record of conversations that may be produced in discovery if there’s litigation about a deal/case. Don’t put yourself in that situation.

In terms of note taking, flag for yourself where there are gaps and follow up with the partners after the conversation or as you’re working. I don’t think they’ll view you any less for being diligent about producing the right work product.

Don’t be afraid to clarify if you don’t understand something in the instructions - it saves everyone time. You can ask to confirm what the next steps are or to clarify that you understood the approach to take.

Ask for the opportunity to play back what you heard to make sure you got it. Some of us are excitable...

Yes. It gets better, though, as you become more familiar with the concepts.

Just point blank say can you repeat - want to be sure I'm getting the request down not to miss anything. Or after meeting send a recap email with your notes and the assignment and let the partner know it helps you stay organized.

For many partners the email would not be successful. Try to get the verbal playback in the moment.

How do you keep up/in touch with your network? Mine barely post anything on LinkedIn, so commenting on their posts is out of the question, and apparently it's impolite to just message or email them if the job searcher doesn't have anything to share besides asking for a referral or opening. If I don't have any relevant information to share with them, what should I do?

Hi 👋
I got an offer from enphase and trueblue.
Can anyone give me some idea which is best to work, learning and environment wise and

do anyone having/had work experience on these two companies?

Moving to the Bay Area fall this year from the east. I’ll be working out of Los Gatos and my wife out of San Bruno we have two kids (4 and 2). Looking at the move to the west as short term (~2 yrs) and looking to rent a place for now (2 or 3 bedroom max). Anyone have recommendations on places around the Bay Area to rent so it’s an easy commute for my wife and me (max 3 days a week in the office) as well as for a family. Thoughts ?

Big Law associates: Do you see a trend of intense “great resignation” recently? 5 people I know (a 3rd year at WilmerHale, a 7th year at Latham, a 5th year at Latham (same office, same practice), another 7th year at Latham (different office, different practice), a 6th year at MoFo) all quit in Feb. or early March. None of them lateraled (yet) and at least one of them does not plan to practice law anymore. I thought it was about Latham or this practice group before learning about the other two.

WWYD: I applied for an associate position at a plaintiff’s firm that is advertising how they’re currently expanding in leaps and bounds over 7 days ago, and even got an old classmate of mine who is currently there to forward my CV and other materials to the decision makers on top of applying through the normal channel. I haven’t heard a thing. Do I reach out to the firm to see where they’re at in the process? Do I continue to wait patiently for them to reach out?

I am considering transitioning from being a W2 employee to a independent contractor/1099. What are some important questions I should ask before making a decision?

For context, I have been with my litigation firm for just over 3 years and have been barred for 4. I am doing fine, but I dislike the job and would like to reduce my hours (and get rid of some of the non billable work I have to take on). Ideally, I would transition to a job that I love, but I’m not sure what that is yet. Cont. below.
