Does anyone carry around pocket knife in the city? Is it legal to carry one with a small blade? Been hearing about all sorts of crime in the city recently, and feel like I need something to feel a little safer.

I'd opt for something like pepper spray or mace instead of a small knife - it is easy to get a knife taken away from you and turned on you

Pocket knives are illegal to use for self defense in NYC. Just get pepper spray. Better range, less deadly, lower chance of it being used against you, legal to use for self defense.

like

You have to buy it at specific locations as well, you can’t have it shipped to you

Also it can't be a gravity knife. Look up the Spyderco ukpk

From the responses it seems like nothing “legal” in nyc will truly offer much protection as the criminal who don’t care about the law will likely have a more deadly weapon. Perhaps it’s more of a question of what you value more, your own safety or their laws?

like

Well that’s certainly why you train and get fluent with the weapon you choose, so you can perform better while under pressure, and I am a fortunate victim of a situation in the past where if someone didn’t have a certain weapon on them, I might be dead today.

Ps as a matter of fact i do carry a certain personal possession on me everyday that I value more than the their laws. My own life.

like

A pocket knife would take way too long to get out and be terribly ineffective in most circumstances. More likely to get it used on you or to give the perp an excuse to use whatever they have on you.

Agree with pepper spray suggestions. A cane if you are trained can be a really good weapon. But if you are trained.

A common thing you likely carry already may be better than a pocket knife. Your keys.

That said. Stay alert. Skip the ear buds. Be smart.

I’ve said this before: get a pistol. If you’re caught, no bail anyway!

This is very true. I spend half my life in FL and am a gun owner. If you’re going to own a gun, it is imperative that you get trained how to use it and store it properly. My grandfather taught my brothers and me all this stuff when we were kids, but even I still go to the shooting range.

Need some advice! Moving in with my partner soon and I currently live with two roommates. Some of the stuff in the apartment is mine, and other things we split evenly. My partner has a ton already so I don’t need to take some items, but if my roommates want to keep them, do I charge them since I’d sell them anyway (TV/coffee table and furniture items)? Would it be fair for them to pay me out for the things that we split (and they’re keeping- couch, side tables)? What is the protocol here 🤔
