You should be doing both, apps like MyFitnessPal are very helpful in keeping track of most of what you need.
In an absolute simplest of definitions, the only thing that matters in weight management is calories. Eat less calories, lose weight. Eat more calories, gain weight.
But not all calories are created equal. A slice of cheese is calorie dense but doesn’t have many nutrients, so eating the same number of calories via vegetables is the obvious healthier choice.
I’ve found that fixating on calories and macros is not sustainable long-term. Switch to intuitive eating with an emphasis on specific food groups (protein, greens, etc.).
So I find this to be an interesting comment from what I’ve read about IE. Almost all IE proponents I’m familiar with started with some type of tracking to lose the weight and then transitioned to IE. Several of them have acknowledged that they likely wouldn’t have lost the weight they lost in the same time period just following IE
love counting macros because i feel like i am able to eat what i want without restrictions, as long as what i want to eat fits within my macros. highly recommend the book if it fits your macros - you can find it on amazon. it took me awhile to understand the macro counting but once i got it down, it’s awesome! i even do it through the holidays and i haven’t felt deprived at all. would recommend!
I used LifeSum for about a year. But then stopped. It becomes intuitive after awhile. The nice feature is that you track what you eat and it tells you the macros. It also provides target mixes of macros depending on your goals. Essentially macros help when you are trying to balance athletic performance or manage fat loss and muscle retention. These things are for people who are working out a lot and trying to dial into a specific result. Overall not necessary for general fitness.
