Does anyone do any non-christmas decorating in their classroom? Have you had any complaints about it? I'm thinking about getting a Menorah and some Kwanza items this year, to spice it up and because I think the kids would dig learning about them. Only worry is some overzealous parent will accuse me of trying to make Christmas "woke." I just think it would be fun! Thoughts? I don't teach in a super conservative town but we have more than a few loud mouths who lean that way.

I say screw them if they don't like it! It's not like you're replacing Christmas with other holidays, you're just acknowledging that other holidays exist. Sometimes I think fragile parents are really the cause of these woke vs not woke issues. Since when is acknowledging people's differences woke?

That putting a Menorah and a Kwanza item in a room to “spice it up” 🤣 means you don’t care all that much either.

Usually when a teacher places items in a classroom that are not from that teacher's culture, it's because they want students to learn about them. I took the OP's wording as positively as possible. I think we all deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I tend to stick to winter themes. Not because I feel anything else would create controversy, just because I like them.

Honestly as someone who is Jewish (and who is a faculty advisor of our Jewish affinity group myself and my students were just talking about this last week) just putting a menorah means nothing. You can decorate and have Jewish themes/colors - you don’t need a menorah to show that you know our holiday is coming up. Also Hanukkah is not even really one of our holiest holidays so if you were to do something like this you would want to do something to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur earlier in the year. I would honestly just skip all of religious holidays And keep it like it’s December keep it like a winter wonderland or something like that. We have this fight every year at my school where there’s a beautiful Christmas tree up with red and green garland and then just menorah and Kwanzaa candles and it’s like no can we actually just decorate maybe more with the colors that are associated with Judaism and Kwanza. That to me is more impactful than just including a token menorah or Kwanzaa candle.

likesmart

Unless you were of that religion just stay clear unless you actually know what you’re talking about. I love that you’re thinking about this but honestly it does more harm than good if you actually don’t know the religion. Instead just don’t do any denominational decorations and just decorate your classroom in winter decor

smart

I put up strands of lights around the whiteboard, snowflake decals on the windows, and other winter wonderland items. The kids (of all backgrounds) especially love when I project a fireplace with crackling wood sounds while they’re working quietly (YouTube). We’re going to have hot chocolate and share our projects before the holiday break—hoping for cooler temps! 🤞

I hang items in my room related to winter, but discuss many types of holidays throughout December.

What is a useful, comprehensive but not too long of a book for parenting toddlers?

LO is 16 months old, very sweet and social, at the park every day with other kids with either me or her nanny. Not in day care. Yesterday we had a play date and she slapped another baby on the head. Not hard and did not scare her, but the act of “aggression” took me by surprise and I felt terrible about it. I’d like to be more proactive about toddler psychology, what’s to come and how to react/ teach. TY!
