No. It’s convenient. Put yourself on “do not disturb”. That’s the unspoken way of avoiding contact
Get off of my porch!!! Angry fist shake
I have no clue what they do all day
No way! Skype makes shit happen fast, I love it. I can’t tell you how many decisions get made in a matter of minutes as opposed to days they could take via email. And even when not used for productivity, it’s a great way to refresh every now and then instead of having to go on your much more distracting phone to text friends you can just see which of your mates are green and ping them, if they are busy they don’t need to reply right away.
I meant you can put it off if it’s a bud who is just messaging you for fun. If it’s a manager, go back to my point about how it generally gets stuff done quicker than an email would. I love it when MDs and SMs Skype me, it cuts through all the formalities BS and gets to meaningful decisions, quick.
DND on Skype works well or just log out
IM is fine, but I hate when someone calls me on Skype out of the blue without pinging first - I'm always scrambling to grab my earphones.
Suspect it’s generational. I’m older and an email person. Inbox zero etc. The IMs come in “quick question...” but most aren’t quick. A good answer requires a little time and thought, even if it’s just 5 minutes. I’m a writer by trade, so that probably also has something to do with my preference. I can organize emails more easily also, so there’s both an accessible paper trail but also a library of sorts when I get that quick question again
I agree! But it’s not generational! I’m 32 and hate it....but don’t like social media or incessant texting either. Maybe it correlates more to the level of consciousness of an individual. 🙃
Yes absolutely! It’s totally big brotherish. We aren’t doctors. Things aren’t that urgent all the time that they need an instant response. A question should be able to be answered on the recipient’s time over email.
But what if everyone who emailed you pinged you instead? Totally unsustainable
I like IM, it's so fast. MS teams /slack are best. It can be asynchronous if needed, or immediate when required. I get so many emails... It's annoying to skim through and see that I missed something pretty important because it got buried.
Just sign out.
I just permanently appear as away. That way, I still get messages emailed to me as missed conversations.
If it's important enough, they text, call, or email. If they let us have Skype on our phones I would actually show available.
Since I use a dedicated laptop for Citrix access to my primary client (because it doesn't work right on my KPMG laptop), I'm not chained to my KPMG one throughout the day.
