Does anyone else feel like people are inflating their salary numbers here or are including stock when asked about base +bonus? I’m currently F10 and have interviewed at several big tech companies in the last year before I accepted this job. The numbers people are throwing out definitely do not reflect what any of these companies offered for base+bonus.

Could also be location, I'd imagine Bay area cost of living skews comp.

I think Google pays way better than other FAANG. I know people who are junior-ish at FAAN and they do not make 300k salary; not even close.

I don’t know if many posts are actually saying their comp is $500k excluding equity. What you’re seeing is total comp numbers, and those are numbers that can definitely be hit by a lot of lawyers (not just leadership) in big tech. A lot of these companies use company-wide levels. Levels come with it salary ranges, certain bonus %, and equity ranges. Lawyers get a leg up in the system, generally, because they usually are hired on at a more senior (manager/senior manager) level. Once they hit the director/agc/etc levels, that total comp is easily $450-$550k/yr, excluding stock appreciation. VP and higher levels can easily hit $1m+. I would expect for someone with 4-5 YOE to be hired around $275-$350 total comp per year at these companies.

I agree that baby tech doesn’t pay the same, but I’m not talking about them and I’m not necessarily talking about FAANG. I work at a tech company that isn’t FAANG and I make this type of pay.

Haven’t really seen many numbers here, but just got an offer for 180k base, 30k per year RSU, and no bonus. Tech company in TX, 5 YOE. Not sure if that is good, bad, or normal.

Appreciate your advice :)

For sure. Typical General Counsel bases are $300k - $400K. People 3-6 years out saying they are at $200K+ think they’re pulling one over on you.

like

Lol I wish. Total comp my first year was about $330K. Now I’m above $600K though, partly due to stock appreciation.

I thought I was being smart by taking a part time weekend role at an Amazon fulfillment center so I can have a better chance of landing an interview for a program manager role as well as the ability to apply to internal positions. Turns out I blacklisted myself from high paying jobs at amazon. But it’s fine, I got to experience how they treat their lowest level employees and all of their operational gaps and opportunities. Not a company I’d want to work for anymore.

Since moving in house from PP I’ve been astounded at how often business folks want to set up a zoom call to walk through contracts and rewrite language on the fly. Not only is it terribly inefficient, it leaves virtually no time to actually think through things, especially when dealing with long, complicated contracts for things like software purchases. Just wondering if anyone has any good tips for how to politely point out to people how bad of a process that is, assuming others face the same?

Thoughts on when a contract is silent as to whether liability is uncapped? We typically cap liability at contract price, but this particular heavyweight co. wants TCs accepted as is. Their terms disclaim consequential damages but there’s no language at all about whether it’s capped or uncapped. If a K is silent as to this, is it implied that both parties have agreed to uncapped? Or does it go to reasonableness standard?
