My tip is that I pretend I am a transcriber and take ridiculous notes.
No one could read what I typed up in noted but me because I only type as much as I can while joining the discussion. I try hard to type the things I will want to remember, and then for 15 minutes immediately after the meeting I read and highlight the notes into three buckets - things to remember for context - actions to take - and opportunities to pass on. That way I have a task list and an externalised memory.
I can't log out of the computer at the end of day until all notes are closed out. I close notes when tasks are all done. If a task must wait for next day then that task gets a timeslot appointment in my diary during the week.
Maybe make your calls with 15 minute note revision buffers?
I struggle with remote/video calls in general, even being able to interact normally on them. It’s like my brain doesn’t register them as “real.” I’m much better with in-person meetings. I wonder if there’s some sensory/processing stuff going on (for both of our cases).
I'm sure this is common for all of us in this bowl.
For me, remote / zoom is a gift and a curse.
It's a lot easier to "get away" with my lack of focus, distractibility, fidgeting, etc. In person I'm sure I would see more consequences when people see me getting lost in a meeting. With zoom meetings, no camera, I don't have to mask.
On the other hand I think the conference calls and zoom meetings probably make me a bit more distracted than I would be in person.
This! Love remote work because i can move around, and not being able to move in an office makes me feel like i cant think
Hate remote work because the second it feels like someone's communication is inefficient, i check out and struggle to check back in
Interesting. My nephew has severe adhd and couldn’t do remote college classes, so he dropped entirely.
I find it easier on phone than by video too
I struggle with this to, I’m coming from working in person and this all online is killing me. I find it hard to pay attention unless I’m talking.
I asked my project manager to create a task list because my memory on these meetings is poor but he said that’s on you.
I reached out to my colleague relations, because I’m tired of my coworkers starting their responses to my questions with, “As discusssed,”
You are not alone. I think this is actually very common. I am a visual learner anyhow so seeing someone talk at me does not help me. I can't retain the information.
You're not alone. That's why I retain recordings so that I can always go back whenever there are issues that I was not able to write down.
Tell me about it! I just simply cannot comprehend anything when it is presented through a screen. Grateful for video recordings as I am able to replay the entire call and review the content.
I struggle SO much with this. When not on video, it’s significantly easier to retain info for me. When on camera it’s like I lose the ability to listen and I just become hyper-aware of myself and moving around/fidgeting. I usually will just turn on video for intro/kick off of the meeting and then turn it off if I’m not presenting.
Yeah I’ve found it’s easier to turn my camera off and walk around and listwn
